Well things seem better right now, i have been using the DSl since 6.30pm and my speeds are flying.

Tried a Microsoft server and got 53.3K downstream...i pray this remains the same and not some heavy downloader in Limerick is eating his dinner right now.

    :D

Same here. I'm on UTV Clicksilver and my speeds had been terrible since the weekend, but at about five o'clock today there was a huge improvement.

Web surfing is flying and downloads are always above 50k.

    Hope it lasts.

I spoke to some just now in technical support and what he said was Eircom admitted there was problems and that they are actively working on the problem.

I asked to speak to someone high up in regards the DSL exchange here in Roches Street, i asked if more bandwidth could be made available on the DSL line from 2MB to something more reasonable.

So as all 48 users can at least have a functional service, god willing they will...but for right now it's at least functional for me.

Rating Compared to all connection types worldwide, yours is above average

    Nice. 404kilobits per second.

    19 seconds
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.

Lovin that. better stay like that.

    Thats with Bandwithplace.com.

With UTV speedtest, i get 948592 bytes transferred in 18.015 secs

    411 kbit

    Very nice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,892 ✭✭✭bizmark

    Mine is bad anuff still

    113kbs to 256kbs

    It used to be 450kbs

AHHHHHHHHH well give em a few days and we see

Its improved today (but has since dropped for me again) - average 108kB/sec on Dumeter, 30MB file D/l in about 9mins.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 743 ✭✭✭UbahOne

    Ancient1,

A 30mb file in 9 minutes is the best ya can get...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 277 ✭✭Fabre

    Yes much better indeed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

Apparently they've quadrupled available bandwidth. Thank f*ck.
Now get back to your warez downloads!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 277 ✭✭Fabre

Btw ubahone and ancient you should set your Dumeter properly.
Its improved today (but has since dropped for me again) - average 108kB/sec on Dumeter, 30MB file D/l in about 9mins.

    30mb in 9mins thats something around 55kb/s

The theorical max you can get with our 512kbps line is 68.8Kb/s

in Dumeter go to options / general
And in the bottom line select the modem.

Wait my computers unbleavebale lack of memory seemed to be slowing my broadband down

i restarted the pc and got 410 kbits from 2 tests

Is it possible for the lack of ram to slow down broadband?

    cheers Fabre,
i didnt even notice that the dumeter was reading all interfaces instead of just the zyxel.

Unlikely. These tests just aren't hugely acurate. Don't take them as gospel. A far, far better indicator is how fast your downloads are going. You didn't get broadband to repeatedly run speed tests and look at pretty DU graphs after all :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,892 ✭✭✭bizmark

:D but wouldnt the lack of ram affect the usb port ?

Ah screw it it hardly matter,s lol :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 743 ✭✭✭UbahOne

    Bizmark...not AT ALL.

Fabre...mine was set properly. I dont know how or why but i keep getting those speeds...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,502 ✭✭✭MrPinK

You're DU meter is definitely not right. At 109Kb/s a 390Mb file would have taken just under 1 hour to complete. I'm afraid you don't actually have a 872K connection :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 743 ✭✭✭UbahOne

Well thats the average overall it says im getting. I dont know why its reading that.

Yes it can for USB. It depends on your hardware/software/OS configuration and specs.

well looking above i see that your screen has a graph limit of 62.5 kb/sec. however you seem to be downloading at 109 kb's, so therefore of course the screen is full red, cos the graph goes about another 40 kb's over that

still, thats damn good speed, i take it you have a 1mb line to get speeds of that magnitude...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 743 ✭✭✭UbahOne

ye that number on the side is the max a 512k connection can get as set by DU Meter. I cant comprehend why it says that speed. No doubt its bloody fast BUT i still get a 1mb file in 18 seconds and the amount normally is 19seconds in PERFECT conditions so obviously im not on a 872k line...dunno why its running at the MOST perfect condition though...theres gotta be some ppl online.

go to DU meter, right click->options
    go to Graph Options
then in connection type select Resize Graph Automatically.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,563 ✭✭✭Tazzle

Go to options and set it to dialup connections only, dsl modems, i take it u have a usb modem, appear as lan and dialup connections, so it gives you the false impression you have twice your bandwidth by counting from both your PPPoE connection and LAN.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 743 ✭✭✭UbahOne

Done. Should i download something and see what it says?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

yup, and one more thing, in the general tab make sure only your internet modem (adsl or whatever) is selected in the interface tab at the bottem, i believe you did this already.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 743 ✭✭✭UbahOne

Yup done all that. Right ill go to downloads.com and download something over 1mb and see what it does...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 743 ✭✭✭UbahOne

    oh gr8...112kbps now.

heh, here's mine... i attached my jpg to this message... i hope this works

this is my average downloading off a relatively ok american server

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 743 ✭✭✭UbahOne

Well thats a decent speed too. I mean it is peak time...ppl only going to bed about now. I have to tell i gave IOL a deadline to get this sorted for me cos i was havin the ****test downloads in the evenings and they replied today saying it will be fxed this evening...so im trying to think did they do something to make it faster for me to get me off their case...HIGHLY UNLIKELY, im just an average jo. Dont know why im gettin such RIDICULOUSLY high speeds. I mean with speeds like that...a 5gb cap seriously goes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

you're on 48-1 contention, so unless you get speeds less than 1/48th of 512kbps, your getting with your product specs.

However i'm on 8-1 contention... so as long as i get 1/8th of 512kbps im within my product specs... as you can see, i'm far better off than you as regards this. But if your speeds do drop below 1/48th of 512 (i tihnk its about 1-2kbps) then you can legally say they supplied you with an inferior product and just stop paying, then move to a proper uncapped broadband service.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 743 ✭✭✭UbahOne

Oh God ye, i got some pretty good advice when emailing them and they responded excellently so far. But if this stops and the service becomes inadequate again then ill quit and move to netsource. I really didnt think the cap would be a problem but everything is so fast you just eat it up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

i was downloading the latest Counter-Strike beta earlier today/yesterday, its 400mb's. the same for the latest beta's in Team Fortress Classic and Day Of Defeat. This would eat up any cap. easily.

anyway, heres my latest "slow" download screenshot... just remember, close your mouth and don't drool. and take care to note the speed i spiked too....

btw that speed is averaged over time, not the instanteous value

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 743 ✭✭✭UbahOne

Looks about right to me with that contention rate ya have.

Im trying to figure out why my speed is still that high? Its not that big of a problem. I dont mind getting really high speeds, im just trying to work out the math of it and its not working out. So either the line is messed up or something else. but even if i restart im still downloading at 109 - 112kbps continuosly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

i tihnk i got your problem.... go to options in DU Meter
and in general options under "Display Units" choose kiloBYTES per second (kb/sec)

then if it still says your downloading in the hundreds then you're blessed, but since you're capped, its a mixed blessing.

You might be seeing the kbps figure, which means divide by 8 to get how many kb's your downloading.

    e.g. 512 KBPS= 64kb's max
i'm getting 60kb's, which is very near my max possilbe

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 743 ✭✭✭UbahOne

Was already at that. Dont have a clue why its still that high. Mixed Blessing indeed. Already gone through a gig this evening...luckily its reset at the end of the month, then ill have to plan it out so i dont go over.

I wonder if the recent problems were anything to do with netsource or contention at all.

The last couple of days, everything is back to normal, d/l speeds are back to 53k steady, pages load in an instant.

Surely the same ppl are using the same exchange as me..yet all of a sudden there is no problems.

Couple with this it seems that not only users of netsource had poor performance lately, as there has been countless treads about the same from utv, and eircom subscribers also.

We all use the same network...was this an eircom problem in reality?

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

it oculdn;t ahve been eircom's fault, as i;m on wireless and that was also crapping out. But now thats fixed. download speeds back to their usual a\verage of 55k and pings down too 30 average to my gateway... which is lowest ever. life just got good on Irish Broadband.

Indeed...i just downloaded Nero 6009, i got a constant downstream of 53-55K. That's what i want and expected from the DSL service in the first place.

We as customers only ask it does what it say's on the tin...that's not unreasonable is it?
