Don't you guys think that this whole censorship thing you've got going here on these boards is just a little over the top? forgive me for stepping out of line here if there is actually a good reason for it, i mean, i can understand it if moderators cut stuff like pornographic pictures and stuff that people post to the boards, as people at work can get fired for that sort of stuff, but i just posted something to the humour board which started out as "Pr1ckly Pair" and it came out as "*****ly Pair" isn't that i bit over the top? i mean what if someone wants to post to the boards saying that they "Pr1cked themselves with a needle"????

i mean i can perhaps..... PERHAPS even understand the censorship of words such as Fu<k, $hit, and Cun+ etc, etc, etc.... but even that is fairly extreme to be censoring all the time.

As i said, i'm not trying to be pushy or out of line or anything, but i thought that Freedom of Speech was meant to be a right.... as far as offensive pictures go, sweet, censor all you want. bah. who cares, guess i'm just sh1t stirring and i'm used to an uncensored environment.

I have a query about this - is it possible to create one board on the system that is free from this censorship - I'm not exactly -SUGGESTING- that you do, just curious if it's possible with UBB...

it also makes certain individuals attempt to use the english language instead of a string of obcenities.
anyway, whats the problem with the censor?
sure its annoying sometimes, but apart from that, what exactly is wrong with it?
do we need to be able to swear to express our opinions..? the answer is no, no matter how frustrated we are.

I dont believe so.

It is kinda stupid that the system looks *into* words and censors them. For example
Pear$e Street keeps comming out as Pe**** street, becuase we have asked it to auto-censor ars£

Also, this is all automatic, noone is making a decision to censor you, its a stupid software glitch and if anyone can suggest a work around, I'll consider it...

Isn't there just a file containing a word list that is all the words you wan't censored...?..if so, remove arsé....

..or is it just that you can add to the in-built (hidden?) list.... i dunno..

Censor Words
Type all words you want censored in the field below. Do not use commas to separate words, just use spaces. For example, type "dog cat boy", rather than "dog, cat, boy." If you type "dog", all words containing the string "dog" would be censored (dogma, for instance, would appear as "***ma"). To censor more accurately, you can require that censors occur only for exact words. You can do this by placing a censor word in curly braces, as in {dog}. Signifying "dog" in the curly braces would mean that dogma would appear as dogma, but dog would appear as "***". Thus your censor list may appear as: cat {dog} {barn} barn
Do not use quotation marks and make sure you use curly braces, not parentheses, when specifying exact words. Do not put two words in the brackets {dog cat} or leave empty brackets {}.

ps... if you put in {shít}, then u could still type shíthead...if you know what i mean...

or you could turn it off altogether...


anyway... you can set it all up from your control panel ( cp.html )or cpanel.cgi?action=variables or something....

Can anyone explain to me why ppl have to censor words?

I just don't see the point of the type of censorship that is used on this board. I know that someone will try to answer my question above by saying that some ppl find some words offenisve, derogative, abusive etc.


But if i write the word **** like fu<k, f u c k etc. does it make the words any lees offensive.

Words should not be censored because words alone are harmless. It is when they are grouped together to form sentences that they become offensive to ppl. and correct me if I'm wrong but that is why a moderator is assigned to each board to make sure ppl don't abuse the privilage.

I also know that someone is bound to reply (like WhiteWashMan has done above) and say swearing is not necessary (my mother certainly believes it is not), but that is not the point. What should be available is a service that is freely avaible to all to voice the opinons on whatever topics they like and to write in a language or style they prefer within the confines of the law.

Well that is just my 2 cents.

No it doesn't. However it does show the person is incapable of getting thier point across without having to resort to bad language. This isn't a Quinten Tarantino film you know.

If you really want a board with no censorship just set up your own.

Nah realy though, this boards censor thing comes in very handy...

EG. when some abusive little muppet-lord starts abusing people with swear-words, it makes him look very silly indeed.

and if mr. muppet decides to type in his string of swear words (or "grown up" words as he would think of them) using 1's instead of i's etc. then he just looks like a complete muppet who would actually go to the trouble of re-arranging the spelling of a series of words *just* so he can be cool....

however I think censoring "g ey" is a bit weird. it's not a swear word, it's not even a word! but it stops people writing things like dod***.... ok, not a huge problem but unusual all the same.

well, i guess that seeings as i started this topic, you can probably all guess where my standpoint is, but in reply to what some of you have said:

Licksy20: yeah, that's kinda what i was getting at, the whole, Cartman v-chip thingee.... and since you so cleverly found a potential sollution, perhaps some of the words, could be altered so that they will only be censored when found in their exact forms (admitedly this would make it easy for people to swear in the essence of putting an extra F on the front of F$ck but who cares? )
