I saw it at the weekend and it was certainly the best movie I have seen all year. Matrix, schmatrix.
Sad at the end though when yer man didn't catch the german officer's name.

Whether it adds anything to the sum of human knowledge/emotion I don’t know – I do doubt it – but for the most part (the first two hours) it is a tale dispassionately told, its detached air giving an air of immediacy to the inhumanity heaped upon injustice heaped upon degradation heaped upon inhumanity. Tellingly lacking in dialogue (what is there to say that has not already been said six million times before?) the epic scale of the settings and the gorgeous cinematography instead speak volumes – as do each of the coldly brutal acts the occupying forces are shown perpetrating, from tipping the old man in his wheelchair off the balcony to all the casual executions. As cold and depressing and emotionally draining as the first two hours were I loved them. But the final half hour? Sentimentality leavened with saccharine and served with too much – much too much – sugar.

Great film...robbed at the Oscars - Chicago my ass!!!!
Adrien Brody is brilliant in it, and the music is gorgeous.

Still haven't seen it. Must get around to renting it this weekend - after the reviews here and by professional reviewers I really get the impression I've missed out on something special (if nothing else, something special in relation to the mostly cruddy movies released last year)
