PCI Modems, computer crashes & istream

I'm getting a little frustrated. Every time my poor old 'pooter crashes, my istream session doesn't disconnect. So when I reboot and try to logon I get rejected as I already have a session open on the Eircom side.

I then have to phone 1550-555444 at seventy-odd cent per minute to ask some (to be fair helpful) support person to disconnect me at their end. Last months 1550 bill amounted to €6 purely to get this done twice (or possibly 3 times).

I have to acknowledge at this point the very helpful lady I spoke to today who said 'OK I'll call you back when its done', thus saving me a couple of yoyos.

Moral of story - don't use a PCI modem unless you have a really robust computer/OS.
