The Caldwell List

What are the opinions of members of this board of the Caldwell List compiled by Patrick Moore as a companion to the Messier list? Has anyone gone Caldwell hunting or just bagged some NGCs that happen to be Caldwell objects?

If I remember correctly, It's basically just a compilation of the best and brightest Messier objects and the nicest NGC ones, thats all really. I suppose some of the Messier objects are quite dim/boring/challenging for a small telescope, and the caldwell catalogue weeds them out? I dunno.

The Caldwell list complements the Messier list. There is deliberately no overlap between them, so if you see all the Messiers and all the Caldwells, you've bagged 218 deep-sky objects.
I was just wondering what people thought of the list itself, the objects on it, and any difficulties associated with finding them.

Oh ok, well that sounds pretty good then. There might be some nice things I havnt seen on it.

I've never gone Caldwell hunting but on quite a number of occasions I have found out that an object which I would consider one of my favourite NGCs is also a Caldwell object. From what I can tell the objects on the Caldwell list are quite do-able in a small to medium sized telescope.

Btw, why did Patrick Moore call it the Caldwell Catalogue?

Patrick Moore's correct name is Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore. As is obvious he normally goes as plain old Patrick Moore. If he called it the Moore-list then we would have had two M lists. So he called it the Caldwell list to avoid confusion.
I got Stehpehn O'Meara's book on the Caldwell objects last January and some of the things on the list seem quite difficult, while others, like C14 (or is it 41?), are simple. It's better known as the Hyades!
BTW welcome on board Bart. Long time no post.
