UK Subscription better value

    The great SKY rip off....
Comparing subscription fees at the average exchange rates of the last few months between the euro and sterling and allowing for the difference in VAT, the Irish subscription rates should be as follows to the nearest euro:-
    (actual rates in brackets)

    Sky World Package 57euro (60)
    Sky Movies ,, 50euro (52)
    Sky Sports ,, 47euro (49)
    Sky Family ,, 28euro (26.99)

As you can see the only package we get better value on is the Family package.
If you happen to have a friend in the UK and you can receive good RTE/TV3/TG4 via an aerial,it is well worth cancelling that Irish Sub.
It certainly won`t cost you any more and you will have ITV1/2/CH4/5.

    Aersat.

Not a bad idea at all, you'll have the lot then.

Obviously the exchange rates can vary a bit every month. I've UK Family Pack and last month it cost €27.05, this month it is €26.50. So roughly the same.

Unless you're living in the UK and you want to watch the 'gah' and the 'late-late' ! Then the irish sub is the only way to go regardless of cost.

    I'd imaging so ( I can't see any reason not to )

    suppafly,

a lot of the other services I think you refer to are 'interactive' and reliant on you making a phone connection - for example to vote on Sky News, or to read e-mail on Yahoo, or bank etc.

You would not be able to use these as it is inadvisable to connect your box to a phone line (not that it could use it anyway, as it would be dialling UK prefixes). Likewise, you can't order box office events interactively, and even if you do it through your friend, billing would be complicated.

For the same reason mirror subs are not possible (phone connection mandatory). Also things like repairs would need to be arranged independently (obviously you don't call Sky), and so warranties may be practically 'out' - unless of course you ship the box over and back to the UK.

AFAIK Sky+ will work - especially from 1/10 when it is rumoured you do not need to pay extra for recording, so there is never a need to have phone connected.

For all the above reasons you are better off not getting your mate to get a new subscription with subbed box in UK. New Subs are subject to 12 months permanent phone connection, and your box in Ireland would quickly fail a 'phone home' test, leading to suspension of service, etc.

If you want a UK sub you can:

    1. Buy an unsubbed box in the UK, and get your friend to sign up
    2. Buy a second hand, out of contract box, an as per 1 above
    3. Swap your box and card physically with someone in the UK

If you go for 3, make sure both are out of contract (no phone), make sure both are similar age / model etc., and it helps if both want the same package (family pack etc.). Otherwise this is an excellent way to get ALL the UK and Irish channels - especially for stuff like ITV2, Talksport, the regional ITVs and regionalised EPG (coming soon) - this is the only way.

This has been discussed before, btw, there is good advice available if you do a quick search of this forum.
