I had a few games of "Friday the 13th" on the NES (Despite it's cute outlook it has the capacity to make you jump - Suprising for a NES game :) and it sparked a conversation between me and my girlfriend about the differences between Friday 13th and Halloween... Eventually it led to me browsing on the net for a while and coming across an interesting few F13th sites, one in particular was created by a F13th Die hard fan who is convinced that Jason was indeed the King of all Horror Flick slashers, and that F13th movies were amongst the best ever made... They certainly seemed to be the goriest at the time judging by the pictures and Jason history files.

    What do you think?
F13th Movies were gory enough, but then again so were the Nightmare on Elm Street movies (Which brings me to the pictures I've been seeing in regards to a JASON vs Krueger film coming soon - Is this old news or os it in the pipeline?) and there was a host of other horror flicks that swamped the 70's-90's

Anyhow, who is the king of horror film killers!? There's most definately more than two out there of some memorable note, so post them up.
    Give us your verdict...
Who wouldn't you like to meet in that famous, shadow bitten dark alley?

    Chucky...

In 1 and 2 he scared da ****zer out of me...not so much in 3 and 4.

not sure though...Alot of them just get stupid after 2 sequels...(esp freddy)

The first Nightmare On elm Street was decent, yet once it reached the third (Which was funnily enough the only one I truly remembered and remotely liked) it hit a slump, and Im sure this applies to any and all continuously revamped movies (Although I hear JasonX was suprisingly good)

I am intrigued by the Freddy vs Jason film...
I know by the look of the picture, the sound of the title, and even the THOUGHT of it that it'll probably be quite a nasty flop, but...
It may be an all out battle of the slashers, something which might be intresting, as in it'll be nice to see how the idea is handled...

Chucky always made me laugh. The 1st and 2nd were pretty alright, yet as you said BK, the rest verged very heavily on the dire side :)

I can't believe I forgot about the Child'sPlay movies... Still, there has to be more!

I've always had a fondness for the Halloween movies. I saw the first one when I was 8 years old, and I've been fascinated with them ever since.

What I've loved about the Halloween movies is that they've mostly been quite subtle in their approach to Michael Myers. They've never come out and explicitly said he's some kind of supernatural force (although some of their "explainations" for his resurrection in subsequent movies have been quite dubious - the most obvious one being the one between H20 and Resurrection).

The Friday the 13th movies have always been, for me, about cheap scares. Don't get me wrong, sometimes cheap scares are fantastic, and the first two Friday the 13th movies provided some of the best cheap scares you can find in movies. I just kind of lost interest by the third one, when they finally gave Jason his mask.

To steal a phrase from the world of advertising, Halloween has always been the "original and best". It laid down all of the rules (now 'cliches') for Hollywood slasher movies, and remains, for me, John Carpenter's least ridiculous movie (yes, that includes the Thing, and the Fog). Their reluctance to let the franchise die an honourable death, however, has been a little disappointing to watch. Also disappointing is the fact that the studios literally butchered the best film in the series (Halloween 6). If you have even the slightest bit of respect for the Halloween movies, you owe it to yourself to hunt down a copy of the Producer's Cut of Halloween 6 (Check eBay).

But after all that, Maniac Cop still rules with fists of steel.

I'd say the unltimate slasher movie was American Phsyco :D

I love the part were he tries to feed the kitten to the ATM Machine or when he circles the chainsaw before dropping it on 'yer wan' ...

The best horror movie ever would be either Halloween or The Shining [only the part when the kid cycles round the corner & sees the twins] - man that feaked me out .... Also in Salem's Lott when the janitor guy is in the rocking chair [man I had nightmares for months after that - saw it when I was 10] .... Saw it on Sky1 a few months ago & thought it was tame [but still got myself ready for a fright]!!

he's not really a slasher kinda a person. But only one film ever had a lasting effect on me in fear---

(I said chucky scared the ****zer out of me but it wasnt like i was affected long term)

---Wasnt even a film. The first part of Stephen King's IT...I still dont like clowns and fear the toilet as a portal to evil
(still hate clowns but the toilets safe now).

(I saw it when i was 5) I swear my entire generation (17-19) were affected by that clown. Everyone i kno saw it around the same time as me and they all have had some lasting effect on them. Second Question to the post HAs IT had a lasting effect on YOU!!

I say the 1st part cause when i saw the 2nd part (5 years later) I was disapointed and confused (only 10) and the fear was lost. Spiders dont freak me (I kept thinking of the ant in honey i shrunk the kids)

Slugs now...They freak me (not scared freak just disgusting)

Anyone see that b-movie horror flick with killer slugs. That film i saw recently and it was a rarity to have a film when i'm 18 to make me feel sick. But slugs peeling the skin of a naked women is just WRONG!!

Tbh i have an irational fear of clowns also, not that i run for cover every time i see them but they just freak me out altogether, and i blame IT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

    see see!!!

    The clown is EVIL!!!

strange though more people freaked by him...though he is not a slasher. (slasher guy who systematicly kills everyone in increasing gory ways)

Congratulations Lex_Diamonds, you unknowingly scared the living **** out of my girlfriend who also has an extremely low tolerance to IT / Clowns (Thanks to the film)...

Wasn't that the one where he pinned one of the kids to the toilet door, or am I getting mixed with one of the other ancient slasher movies!?

I generally dont like Slasher films as a whole, I much prefer the more supernatural horror film. Slashers are generally just a series of elaborate death scenes strung together with some crap plot in the same way a porno strings together sex scenes.
You can guess what happens next...
    He fixes the cable?

I think other than the big-wigs of the genre, like the Halloweens, Nightmares and Fridays they're mostly crap. Those films have their own style which keep them from being drivel. Although, the general sequals are immense poo also. Nightmare series after number 3 just became Freddy killing people and wise-cracking about it. I couldn't even bring myself to watch the last Halloween, but I quite liked 4 because of the brilliant twist at the end. And There's been a fair few ****e Fridays, but once Jason gets his ass in gear there's always fun to be had, like in the chase at the end of XIII. Did anyone else roffle when he knocked the jukebox flying and all the thugs were like "Hey man, we cut you!" and he just lifts his mask and they're saying "Whoa, it's cool man!" :D

Yeah they seem to elaborate on Freddy's wise cracks...
Was never too big a fan of Mike Myers, and Jason just trudged around killing people.

I haven't seen many of any of them, other than NMOES, but as Angie said they degraded into pointless dribble after the third one, which was the one I remember the most and liked the best.

Chuckie, too, degraded into wise cracks and the supposed 'Humourous' side of pointless slaying. (Then again Brad Dorff is pretty cool)...

Thats the only reason really that I posted this thread...
After a continuous drawl over the www.freddyvsjason.com site I just wanted to know if there were any other popular old style slashers other than the Halloween / F13 / NMOES films...

After just checking it again I've refreshed my hatred for the fact that Kelly Rowland is going to star in that movie...
It's not like it'll be good anyhow, but I find the whole Freddy v Jason thing to be mildly interesting...

They are both iconic film killers and, hopefully, they wont end this potentially dismal movie with some blunt ending. I want one of them to win (Preferably Freddy) and I do sincerely hope that Kelly Rowland snuffs it (In a nice gorey way) somewhere near the start.

Judging by the pictures and the trailer (The fact that she isn't in them much) say's to me that, unless the fact that she's popular and seeing her die would offend little pathetic pop fans / give her a reason for the film maker to keep her alive, she won't last until the end.

Just to see her pop her clogs would be worth seeing anyhow.

For a start, there's the Sleepaway Camp series, which tried to pick up where Friday the 13th Part 1 left off. Unfortunately, the films don't seem to be that popular this side of the atlantic.

And then of course, you have the afformentioned Maniac Cop series, whose heritage is worth checking out for a Slasher who's-who. The incredible-faced, incredible-named Robert Z'Dar has been in some fantastic ones, and the director (William Lustig) also gave us the very fine slasher movie Maniac.

I didn't really like the Maniac Cop series.
I think Bruce Campbell was really the only claim to fame.
The first film was alright, pretty enjoyable.
But the second film was just dreadfull.

Not sure would you really call it a slasher, but The Hitcher was one that always did it for me.

Other than that, Alex Chandon's Cradle Of Fear was watchable. It was basically just a vehicle to make a movie star out of Cradle Of Filth singer, Dani Filth, but there's so much ridiculous gore in the film I was pissing myself all the way through. If you want to see the hot one from 'Bits' get ravaged from the inside out by a mutant baby, then by all means, see it. I roffled. I'm probably going to hell now, but I roffled.

    Candyman was brilliant, I thought.
Again, not really a Slasher, but it was a class film.

I kno your all going to hate me for this but....

U MUST GO TO FREDDY VS JASON

    why?

Simple it was stated on a AVP fan site that fox will make a Aliens versus Predator film IF freddy vs jason is a success...

Kinda stupid should be other way round i think. AVP had the higher chance of success. I guess its a safe bet with FVJ if the film flops fox dont loose a high quality series (alien saga). If AVP flopped another alien film would look unlikely. If FVJ flopped no one cares if another film came or not...

p.s Wha about Texas chainsaw massacre as a slasher flick...would it count....or how about the DENTIST...

p.p.s they are making a remake of texas chainsaw massacre...oh gawd this is a bad era we live in...a tasteless era or sequals and remakes!

p.p.p.s Anyone go to the FVJ site?? does anyone else think in the background jason's eyes make him look completely stoned/drugged in some way...

I don't really like slasher movies, I saw one of the Freddie Kruger ones when I was about 8 and it freaked me out a bit. It was the one where he came back to get all the kids, he made a puppet out of one guy and walked him off a high building and stuck another girls head into a TV. It's funny now but it had an effect on an impressionable 8 year old!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

    **** all that tbh.

Everyone go and see Ichi The Killer NOW!

  • Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 4,600 CMod ✭✭✭✭RopeDrink

Blitz, Jason in the FvJ film looks deformed, nevermind drugged up.
The Hitcher was a nasty enough ole film alright... Afterall, all it takes is two trucks and a bit of rope to make a nice and nasty mess :D
If AVP flopped another alien film would look unlikely

Well, considering the state of the last Alien film made, I really wouldn't miss it. Predator should have been left alone after the first one, even though (As a child at least) I enjoyed the second one...
I saw one of the Freddie Kruger ones when I was about 8 and it freaked me out a bit. It was the one where he came back to get all the kids, he made a puppet out of one guy and walked him off a high building

That's because Freddy Krueger was the only true Bogey Man in those days. it was the one film out of the lot that put the ****s into kids and made them do what they were told... As for being made into a puppet, you failed to include the fact that he did so by means of ripping all his veins out and having them connected to his claws. Yes, probably was comical to see, but back then (To a younger viewer) it's something that'd **** up your head.

Mike Myers and Jason have no real personality. You may as well make a film about a killer piece of cardboard looming up on people. It's stupid - I wouldn't mind seeing Jason X however.
p.p.s they are making a remake of texas chainsaw massacre...
After getting half way through the trailer of it on the FvJ Webby (Which took about 20mins to DL) it crashed my PC. THATS how bad the film is likely to be.

    OMG! That's absolute rubbish!

They most certainly DO have personality! Maybe you mightn't think so simply because they're both silent, but they certainly have personality in bags! It's all in their style, their movements, and their mannerisms. They're both very fleshed out characters in this sense. I guarantee that if you were to have them both wear identical clothes and masks, you could easily tell them apart just by the way they move, or how they'd kill someone. I think that's what seperates them from all the other slashers out there, as they've actually got character.

But **** Freddy Vs Jason tbh, because after seeing Ichi The Killer, I couldn't care less. Freddy, Jason or for that matter Michael Myers simply couldn't equal the characters in this film. Anyone who's seen the film would know that anything Freddy has ever cooked up has never come even close to Kakihara's torture session with Mr. Suzuki. The see sadism of it was utterly blinding.

Although, I do feel that Ichi The Killer exists on a much higher plane of existance than any 'Slasher' film, because it has a shockingly deep plot, and characters that can be related to far more than your average horror-movie baddie. It honestly left me awe-struck, and I dont say that because of the gore in it. Believe it or not, I didn't find any of the film gratuitous in the least. All the excesses were very in-tune with the characters, rather than the simple 'Kill for the sake of killing' that's popular with Slashers.
