The intruders shadow

Not having slept too well for the last week, I stayed up last night with the idea of exhausting myself to the point of getting a good nights sleep. I read, watched a little TV, and trawled around the internet for an hour or two before finally hitting the bed. The CD was playing a beautifully calming Angela Gheorghiu in Trovatore, so I let it play through as I drifted off to sleep.

I do not know how long afterwards it was that I awoke to the door to my room creaking open slowly, deliberately. My room had been in darkness, but now a shaft of light was thrown via the hallway through the bedroom door from the streetlight outside. The door stopped. Then it creaked open a little more. I tensed and waited to see what happened next. The corner of the room was partially lit through the door. Then a shadow of something in the hallway passed cautiously outside my door. There was someone in the house.

From having been half awake, my heart was now pounding, my mind racing trying to assess my options. I tried to figure out where I had left my mobile phone. Had I left a back window open? Had I locked the back door? Dammit why hadn’t I got an alarm?

I tried to lay still in order that the intruder might think that I was asleep and posed no threat to him. At least I was the only one in the house, there was nobody else whose wellbeing had to be considered. I figured my mobile was in the living room, but there was no way out of the bedroom without passing the uninvited guest. It was probably prudent to consider that he was a seasoned housebreaker and therefore prepared for resistance. On the other hand, the most potent weapon I had to hand was my can of deodorant spray.

I always thought that if something like this happened, I would jump up, apprehend the intruder effortlessly, give him a few digs for his trouble, have him taken away by the Gardai and then get back to my nights sleep. Now that it was happening, I was frozen in the bed, prepared to lash out if I was cornered and given no alternative, but otherwise happy to remain docile and compliant as long as my person was not threatened.

I waited. Still there was no effort to come into the room. Still the shadow stood tall, unmoving and menacing. Still my heart pounded. It is hard now, in the cold light of day, to gauge how long the standoff lasted.

Then I heard a car pull off outside and the shadow moved with its headlights. The shadow in my room was some contortion of the car cast by a combination of the streetlight and the cars own lights. There was nobody outside my door. I heaved a huge sigh of relief and fell asleep to the best nights sleep I have had for a long time.

Next time, I’ll close my bedroom door properly.
