I haven't asked her yet (because I haven't seen spoken to her today yet) but why would my girlfriend want to know what blood type I am?

Sounds like a question I'd ask tbh.
for no other reason other than I'm still facinated by leaving cert genetic permutations...mmm...
maybe she's gonna put you on the blood type diet??? A-should eat grain etc....
Maybe she's gonna sell your tissue on the black market..

Just sounds like a conversation piece to me, tbh, and something that people should really know about friends and partners. Say if something happened for instance (Heaven forfend, etc) and an ambulance had to be called, one of the bits of informatiob that might help expedite matters would be the blood group of the person receiving treatment.

Very few people, in relative terms, actually know their own blood group. Seems to be more men that women that have this particular tendency not to bother finding out.

Beruthiel sounds about the closest '':/

Although I sincerly hope it is planning in advance rather then after the fact?

It was more "Hi see you later, btw what blood group are you? I am xxxx".

I'll tell you what it is. She's probably read some stupid supplement in the News of the World or some girlie magazine that claims that the can match perfect partners based on a combination of blood type and or star sign or some such nonsense.

The crap they come up with in those things. Ooooohhh looky here, if I eat wispa bars and my partner eats Galaxy then according to Mystic Maura here we are not destined to get married and have 112 children.... pah.

It makes sense if she's japanese.

In japan blood type is used as sort of Star Sign equivalent, love compatibility and all that cobblers. This explains why they seem to mention character's blood type in japanese computer games.

LOL.....it's funny cos it's true. I used to go out with a girl who read Cosmo. I quickly realised that in order to be ready for her ambushes, I was as well off flicking through the articles at least!

    Help me out here.

Is the confusion deliberate? Do you like have secret competitions amongst yourselves and stuff with a super secret scoring system?

Ten points for inducing a facial tick and fifty for hypertension?

    Maybe I'm just paranoid.

It's not paranoia when they really are out to get you...:)

She's probably a vampire with particular taste in blood types...

It's instinct DapperGent. They have a natural preclusion for thinking too hard and gossiping, we have a natural preclusion for farting and talking about football. It's just the way we are.

I think I'm a girl. Football bores the arse off me. I'd much prefer to be gossiping with the ladies, they can be right vicious. :)

no, it’s not deliberate, our brains are wired differently, we happen to know exactly what we are talking about, it makes sense to us, therefore it should make sense to you..
no? then you are thick or just not listening properly! :D:D

Perhaps she got knocked up by some other bloke, and is trying to find out if you share the same blood type as the knocker upper(culprit). So if you ever suspect foul play and demand a *paternity test, the little bastard will be proven to be yours.

*Never having the misfortune to do a paternity test, I can only guess they are determined by taking a swab of blood to be analysed?

There are many two diffenent tests we do here at our hosp. Ceasar. We swab cheek cells and strain out the DNA then analyze and compair. Or we draw blood and do the same thing. You can rule out paternity by blood type if there is a dramatic difference in the blood types...like a type A+ mother and type B+ father can't have a type O- child? otherwise your wasting your time in the ABORH catagory...Go for DNA!

Uhh... Instead of all this frantic worrying/wild speculation, why not just ASK her why she wants to know?

Careful there. They could have an O+ child couldn't they, as A+ can be either AA+ or AO+ and B+ can be BB+ or BO+?

    AO+ and BO+ = AB+ / AO+ / BO+ / O+

Sometimes girls are just curious :D An odd question doesn't necessarily have to mean anything . She may have read an article somewhere or saw some silly quiz that got her curiousity up . More than likely it's one of those off the wall questions that shouldn't send you into a panic .

Oh and I like Cosmo .... some rather interesting reading in there . Most of it's "been there , done that already" but every once in awhile they surprise you with wicked little suggestion or two. ;)

Absolutely. Know how the enemy thinks. As long as you never start a conversation with "...see I was reading this Cosmo article..."

I see they've dumped "Smart Girls Carry Cosmo" from the spine. I always wondered what category a girl who actually read Cosmo was in. The last committed Cosmo reader I went out with switched to Marie-Claire after I asked that. Mind you, she was a fruit basket.

I asked my bloke this one day..
it was purely out of curiousity.
I'm a blood donor so I know what blood group I am.
Was curious as to what he was.

no biggie, maybe your gf was just the same.
Nothing to do with cosmo, or the moon and starts, just being nosey.
Ever thought she might just be nosey?

Right, on blood types, I've nicked the following off the blood donor pages (here) over here to offer an explanation:
    Here we go.

We all have these little marker things called antigens on the surface of our red blood cells. These are so tiny they can't even be seen under a microscope. Everyone's got different ones - blame your parents and grandparents for all that. In fact, only identical twins will ever possess all the same antigens.

All that's very well and good, but when it comes to blood transfusions, there are two very important systems of antigens which need to be matched to avoid any nasty complications.

    The ABO System

If you have blood group A then you've got A antigens covering your red cells.

Blood group B means you have B antigens, while group O has neither, and group AB has some of both.

The ABO system also contains lots of little antibodies in the plasma, antibodies being the body's natural defence against foreign antigens. So blood group A has anti-B in their plasma, blood group B has anti-A (you probably get the picture at this stage). To complicate matters though, group AB has none and group O has both of the antibodies.

Which means giving someone blood from the wrong ABO group could be fatal.

The anti-A antibodies in group B attack group A cells and vice versa. Which is why group A blood must never be given to a group B person.

Group O negative is a different story.

    The Rhesus system

    Still with us?

Well, it gets more complicated here on in, because there's another antigen to be considered - the Rh, (or rhesus) antigen.

Some of us have it, some of us don't.

If it is present, the blood is RhD positive, if not it's RhD negative.

So, for example, some people in group A will have it, and will therefore be classed as A+ (or A positive).

While the ones that don't, are A- (or, wait for it...A negative).

And so it goes for groups B, AB and O.

This effectively doubles the number of different blood types to be matched, because you shouldn't mix blood type A+ with blood type A-.

84% of the population is Rh positive.

(And yes, that means the other 16% of the population is running around with Rh negative blood.)

But to help clarify, here's one of those chart thingies to show you the national distribution of all the various blood groups

    Frequency of major blood groups
    in the UK population

    O Rh (D) Pos 38%
    O Rh (D) Neg 7%

    A Rh (D) Pos 36%
    A Rh (D) Neg 7%

    B Rh (D) Pos 8%
    B Rh (D) Neg 1%

    AB Rh (D) Pos 2%
    AB Rh (D) Neg 1%

I'm blood type A Rh(D) Pos, along with 36% of the population here. I'd ask people their blood type out of curiosity - I mean, how cool and different would you be to be B Rh(D) Neg or AB Rh(D) Neg? Not to mention what a pain in the ass you'd be for the hospital if you were ever in an accident... :D

But it doesn't quite work like that, you don't necessarily have to receive your own blood type.

For instance O- is a universal donor type, which can be given to anybody. Unforunately it can recieve from a much more limited stock.

And as I'm O- the BTSB seem to have my number on speeddial, cause every few months I get a call - sometimes literally to say come in today there's somebody needs my blood. :)
