I want to try and use the modem on my Nokia 7650, connect it with my laptop via infrared, and use the GPRS on the 7650 to go on the net on the laptop.

I have GPRS set up on the 7650, using O2 Speakeasy gprs.
muhahah, they arent even charging me for it, like 90% of users :)

Nokia 7650 Modem support info here:
    http://www.nokia.com/cda1/0,1080,2018,00.html

assuming you have the Full Internet access point set-up (not just wap) you enter pp.internet as the access point name

    user: gprs (or anything)
    pass: gprs (or anything)

    dns1: 62.40.32.33
    dns2: 62.40.32.34

(if using Win 2k you may have problems depending on the Service Pack / if it's IRCOMM support hasn't been updated)

I was running win2k but installed 98 SE last night (2k ate the laptop up - mmx233mhx, 32mb edo ram :)

I installed the Nokia Modem Driver, and loaded Modem up on the phone.

The modem on the phone connected, and I made a connection called 7650 (using irDA modem) on the lappy, and set up the dns etc as above.

When I opened IE (modem on the phone said connected) the Dial a connection popped up with the 7650 connection showing.
I hit 'Dial' but it eventually timed out.

What do I do after the connection is set up ?

hi - ok if you've installed it all ok and it created the 7650 (IrDA) modem for you this is what you need to do then:

in control panel you will see a Nokia Modem Options
open it and click the Installed Modems box click the Nokia 7650 (IrDA) to highlight it

then go to the GPRS access point box and type in pp.internet and click OK

Then you create a dial-up networking account, selecting the 7650 (IrDA) modem and configure it using the details above. Make sure the phone number you are dialing is just *99# with no area or country code.

On the 7650, go into Connections and start the Modem option (over Infrared) on, and point it at the laptop so that your Infrared connection is activated

Double click on Dial-Up Networking account you created and it should start the connection. The G symbol should flash on the phone and get a solid Square around it to show a successful connection.

if it the G just flashes and dies - or you get an error saying GPRS unavailable / Subscribe to GPRS - check you entered the access point name correctly in the Nokia Modem options - if it's ok then you may not be set up on the pp.internet access point and you'd need to contact O2

if it won't connect check the DUN account settings

rememebr to keep your browsing light (keep the Dial-Up properties open so you can see how much traffic you are generating (up+down) - or have plenty of top up cards - pre-pay (full internet) ISP GPRS access on a laptop can eat through a top-up card at 3c per Kb...
