    Its a result of perceptual phenomena called the "filling-in effect" and boundry perception.

    Basically, your brain recognises the edge of the shape and fills in what it thinks should be there.

    The gods in this area are Pessoa, Thompson and Noe and they have published alot of reviews in the area.

    I read it once, but its heavy stuff...definitely worth a read if you like optical illusions and stereographs.
