Requesting advice on growing pear trees

First off, as background, I am a complete black thumb. You name it I've killed it.

Despite this it was decided by all that a tree was needed in the back garden to provide some shade, and, since we all like pears, it was decided to get a pear tree. On the advice of the man in the garden centre we got a conference though he has advised us we'll need a second tree of a different variety to provide decent crops. We'll sort that one next year if this one thrives.

My question is can anyone provide me with some pointers or links to sites on cultivation of pear trees for dummies? The soil is very clayey and the tree will have full sun

    thanks
