What is linux support like for 802.11b hardware? What packages are tried, tested and found to be well supported?

    802.11g not too much (yet.)

802.11b fairly good - main problem is ID'ing chipset and a lot of the 22Mb stuff is propertiery - some cards also only have bnary drivers.

If you stick to older lucent/prism cards then usually OK..

orinoco (& clones) - wavelan / proxim / entrasys / buffalo / avaya / lucent - Client (& now Host AP mode too in BSD) - more or less standard.

prism II works well - popped the pcmcia card out of an AP in a pcmcia slot - windows ID the card - can't find drivers for 2K / XP etc ..
Knoppix just goes "oh look it's got a prism chipset - hang on a mo while I grap an IP from the AP..."

Or do a search for Kismet ....

And the best bit is if you have a bunch of cards there is a good chance if you donate some some guy in Poland or Germany will write a driver for you.

BAD NEWS - Intel get a big thumbs down for not helping with Linux drivers for the centrino chipset .....

Cisco cards are also fairly well supported - on the register there was a recent story about linksys ripping linux code for an AP (they are now oened by cisco)

openap - flashing linux onto an AP
