Looking for job in Tech Support or Net Admin

    Just got the brilliant news that because of the downturn in the telecoms sector and the weak US dollar that myself and 2 others from the technical support team are to be let off at the end of August.
    I'm actively looking for employment in the Network Administrator or Technical Support area and thought it would be no harm to post my CV on here.

    If any of you know of any jobs going then I'd appreciate it if you could let me know and pointers on my CV would be welcome.

    To view my CV please save to your hard disk and rename to c.v..doc.

    Funny thing is I only came back from holidays in Boston on Tuesday. Should have bloody stayed.

    I don't know if the market is much better out there either. UK doesn't look too bad but sure I'll have to try and look around these shores for another while yet. There has to be something out there.

    Sorry for going off topic but does it seem that maybe the recruitment agencies are now sick of people doing to them what they've been doing for the last few years? What I mean is people responding when not qualified asopposed to them sending out adds for stuff that are nowhere near a persons qualifications!

    If you have 50% of the qualifications needed in an add then thats good.
    I know when we put adds into agencies we specify a whole lot more qualifications than we want.
    This allows us to negotiate down the salary that the candidate expects from the add.
    A bit underhand, but not my idea.
    For the job that is on this thread, it says training will be ongoing (read, : we'll pay you **** money but you get training and that should be counted as a bonus). Don't make me laugh.
    I know the company involved here, the guy that owns it will give it to the cheapest person, whether he is qualified or has a token qulification.

    Good luck in your search for a new job. It's always the way that when you are unemployed it's much more difficult to get a job. That's why I would suggest that now that you know you will be made redundant soon, don't bother your arse doing your current job any more. I mean - turn up - but use all your time searching for a new job.
    When I returned to Ireland from the UK last year, I found it very difficult to get a job in the IT sector. It can be a very demoralising experience to feel that you are applying for every relevant job you see, but getting nowhere. It's very difficult to tell, because of course I am basing this on personal experience, and what I see around me, but I have been getting the general impression that things are improving slightly for the IT sector. I have got a few calls from recruitment agencies in the last while asking me if I'm still looking for work. I would like to ask them why they never farking called me when I actually needed a job and tell them to shove it now that I don't need them, but I'm too polite.
    As far as I'm concerned, all recruitment agents (or "specialists" as they modestly like to refer to themselves) are both lazy *and* incompetent. If you like, you could save yourself the hassle of finding this out for yourself, and apply directly to employers. My motto for these agencies is: "Those who can, do. Those who can't, become recruitment agents." Don't worry about messing recruitment agencies around aswell - they don't care about you. Recruitment agencies often advertise jobs that don't exist - just to test the water so that they know what kind of people are looking for jobs out there. You then apply for the job, and you don't even get an auto reply from them. If you are going to use them, don't rely on them, and don't expect any return communication from them. Continue looking for jobs yourself.
    As for your CV, I had a look at it there, and you said you would welcome some constructive criticism. I have learned that it is best to put a list of your skills (or a "skillset") at the top of your CV. This is essentially what any employer or agency is looking for when they read a CV. IT helps them determine quickly if you have the skills for the job they are looking to fill, and they appreciate that you did this to make their task easier. List your work experience next, as they will then be able to see where you gained commercial experience of these skills. Education can probably go after this. I wouldn't bother giving your leaving cert marks or even college grades though. Nobody cares about that to be honest. If you have a diploma or a degree, of course put that down and what your overall grade was, maybe what subjects were covered in the degree, or a description of what you studied during your degree. You can write down where you went to school and when you did your leaving cert, and if there's anything relevant to the job you are applying for write it too.
    Relevance is the key point really - try to imagine you are an employer leafing through several CVs. You need to list things that make your experience relevant to the job. So you you need to customise the way you describe your skills and experience to make yourself seem appropriate for the job to the employer - a bit like marketing, except without the downright lies.

    I can't stand the way they bring you in to their agencies for a "chat" before they will consider sending your cv on to a company.

    I mean, we have nothing better to do than going into agencies to have "chats" that can easily be had over the phone...?

    I'm looking for a job aswell, but there is nothing so now I am looking for absolutely anything to earn enough money to go abroad again...

    It will be the second time I will have had to leave the country for work....

    No point in staying on this sinking ship of a country if you have no commitments...

    Everything about Ireland pisses me off entirely now... the prices... the politics... the services...

    This country is a joke.

    I'm gonna move to somewhere where the government actually give a toss about its public.

    /rant.

    hi all,

    ive just graduated with a degree in IT Management and im currently looking for a job.. I have industry experience totalling about a year... i worked as a net admin and did some web stuff as well...

    just looking at monster and looking at companies sites directly there is very little work out there for graduates this year... the only bloody work is call centre stuff and you need languages like polish and danish and stuff like that... so much for ireland being the electronic hub for europe... my @rse...

    im happy sitting on the dole till september but if i dont get anything i dont know what ill do.... the only options seem to be the UK or USA, but again i dont have a lot of experience...

    im not the only one in this situation.... the sooner this government wakes up and smells the coffee the better... i dont think we have the same situation as we did in the 80's with mass emigration, but im guessing that a lot of people will leave... and ill be one of them if i dont get a job soon......

    i could rant on all evening but ill stop now... ah.. thats better

    Ah go on, rant all evening. I graduated in 2001 and it was crap then too. I had a lovely job lined up but then - lo and behold! - they got rid of all the people they were going to hire. At this point I had already turned down another programming job and now, two years later, I'm elsewhere because I couldn't get into the programming field (I had had 2 summers experience with the company who were going to give me the job).

    Lots of people from my class, clutching fine computer science degrees from Trinity, went either abroad or to work in customer support. And then we apparently need more graduates?! Hmmm....

    FWIW, I work in technical writing and wonder how transferable those skills are to another area...

    that chap, Mark Mearns from Computer Futures is the only recruitment person I've come across that's any good. He'll do the best he can for you.
    I think he sometimes forgets about people so it's worth giving him a shout if you haven't heard from him in a while.
    But if he has something in mind for you, he'll do his best to put you there whether you want to or not!

    hey i'm going into my 3rd in programming

    from this and other treads i'm thinking of dropping out and getting a trade.

    but i do like programming and i thinks its easy enough so far :)

    but what i'm asking is even if i went to say uk out of my degree with 6 mouth experience (fup all)

    could i get a job ther in the current climate ??

    if you like doing it and you are good at it, then you will always get work.... its just a matter of looking hard enough at the moment...

    it doesnt bother me going abroad to get a job....

    Why not try IBM for a tech support job?
    I worked in tech support but moved onto another dept ,

    theres always recruitment for tech support roles as with all call centers there is a high turnover , sometimes due to a bad run company but s far as i can see in this case its just people get trained up then realise they cant hack it,

    as u already have the tech knowledge base already should be a doddle for u , oh and some reeeel nice chiccies working there!

    I've a mate in London who did a grad dip in Tech Writing (after a Law & Accounting degree). Started working as a technical writer over there after graduation (1999 if I remember rightly), transferred into software testing in the same company after about another year. These days his business card happily reads "Software Test Engineer".

    Not impossible then.

    Of course now he's changed his mind and wants to be a solicitor. No pleasing some people (not that I can talk mind you:D)

    I've contacted HR and they said they only take on temp staff in Tech Support and don't advertise the jobs - they use recruitment agancies.
    But I got the name of the Irish agancy they use and have contacted them.

    There are no jobs at all for graduates.
    6 months work experience counts as 0 when employers are talking about experience.
    Best bet is to start looking now for someone to take you on when you leave.
    Chances are slim, but at least you'll be ahead of others in the same boat.
    I know people in IT who have left to go back to uni and study accounting and the like.

    I've almost 2 years professional experience other than work experience though.

    Heading back to college is something I might consider though. Which industry though?
    Pharmacy seems to be flying at the moment - all I need is about 600 points in the leaving.

    i have a mate who works in IBM and she vouched for me for the same or similar postion.. haven't heard anything yet...

    Have to say that cpl recruitment agency are really good.Got a great job through them and they were really helpfull too, rang me up 10 minutes after the interview and told me i got it.Try jobsites.ie thats where i got my job in my current company and the new company.Experence counts for alot, have only a years experience in tech support and that got me the job
