    Hello All,

Need a little help my Grundig (2.41) digital decoder seems to have died, I was on to Sky today and they talked me through a few things (nothing I hadn't tried already) and they couldn't fix it so I have to get an engineer out and that will cost 106euro for just the call out charge. So I have a couple of questions:

Would it be cheaer for me to just buy a new decoder, and does anyone know how much they are?

Would anyone recommend any other repair company other than the one recommended to me by Sky?

    Thanks for your input

Declan why don't u describe the fault either on here or in the technical section and u may get a few more hints. No satelite signal usually means, cable loose or dish misaligned(high winds) or lnb gone.

Are u getting normal ligts on front of box?

It would be a good idea to read through this before paying any $ky engineer your cash. BTW have a soldering Iron at the ready.

    sorry GB,

I am assuming it is a problem with the decoder because the service screen looks funny, looks abit like when you put a magnet next to the tv screen sort of bar going across the screen

I did a signal test and the signal strength is full but the signal quality is 0 there is now bar there.

The lock indicator says not locked
    Network ID is 0000
    Transport Stream is 0000

should the lock indicator be locked can you explain what this is?

    Cheers for the input

So I'm getting the exact same thing - so no HW fault.

    Services - 4 - 6
The signal is digital the numbers are used to identify the data stream - seeing them is better than not seeing them - it's the bars that matter - the top one is the analog signal, noise & pointing at the wrong sat will make this look better than it should. The bar below is the digital signal this is the more important one - but this will non existant until you lock on and the unit extracts info from the analog one.

The symptoms can be caused by many things - you could take the box round to a mates and plug it in to his cable or visa versa to rule out the cable / LNB / grundig.

Many digiboxes are heat sensitive (this being the hottest it's got this year) so switch it off and let it cool and try again

    I don't understand.
I think you more than likely have a H/W fault. A faulty PSU is the usual cause of this problem in the Grundig.

Try another decoder on your own system or visa versa.:)

..when it gets hot - put it on it's side for vertical airflow and it's much happier now.

Had to unplug it at the mains for one minute before it would lock on again...(ie. suckin' diesel again )
BTW:- kinda hard to type when an attention seeking cat is trying to walk across the keyboard...

    Hi,

I have had the same issues, got an engineer out and had a look at the dish, and cables, nothing was wrong.

I only got it on a few stations not them all, I was onto technical support, and after a load of talking I found out that not all stations are broadcast at the same strength, and being in Ireland can cause some issues with receiving the signals, on the fringes of the footprint, and every box has different tolerances of the signal.

I recommend to go and test the receiving signal in the services menu, if it is fine then you will have the same problem as me.

I went to Armstrong Electronics Bluebell Ind Est, 12 (01) 4509480, and got a reconditioned decoder for about € 150 after I gave them my old one, when I had an other issue with it unrelated to this post.

I fix the no signal being received by exiting the station and going back to it again.

    Hope this helps,

    Gerry

If one of the capacitors was blown, which it looks lie C16 may be gone on the power supply, would this cause the problem or if one of the capacitors was gone would the unit not turn on at all??

Just wondering before I buy a repair kit, I don't fancey pay 100 for an engineer to tell me that I need a new box.

    Thanks
