Which County To Retire To?

Out of curiosity, if you had the option of taking early retirement which County in Ireland would you move to ?

Leaving aside reasons due to relatives living in certain areas and this type of reason.

Just considering reasons such as quality of living / cost of living / lack of crime / weather / things to do etc etc..

Of course this is a very personal choice, but just wondered if anyone had any opinions. It would be especially of interest to hear what anyone thinks about Co.Cork / Co,Kerry / Co.Waterford / Co.Mayo - though any county anyone wants to mention would be interesting...

Why retire in Ireland? Given the cost of living here one would be better off transferring their pension to a cheaper EU nation (of which there's no shortage anymore) with a better climate.

btw, this thread is better suited to the After Hours board.

West Cork, down near Clonakilty. Lovely part of the country. I've no relatives anywhere near there so it'd be purely because I like the area.

I also quite like the Kenmare area but that's outside the broadband rollout for years, if ever (Clonakilty isn't) so that's a non-starter.

why would you have to wait 'till retirement age before moving to another County?

Just considering reasons such as quality of living / cost of living / lack of crime / weather / things to do etc etc..

cost of living? WEATHER??? it p!sses down on you while you are beeing fleeced where ever you are in this country.

County: probably stay in dublin, or else get a big country mansion in north wicklow where I grew up. Great scenery, near to dublin, and decent weather compared to the rest of the country.

Other than that I might be persuaded by Waterford.

I I was retiring to a different country then it would definitely be Italy, great quality of life, food, wine, weather, women...

If I had to retire in Ireland I'd probably go home to Offaly, if not I'd go to north Wicklow, it's a lovely part of the country.
Realistically I'd rather spend my retirement in a country with a more agreeable climate so I'd probably go to the states.

    Of Wexford he says:
In my whole weekend in Wexford, I hadn't seen one young person. I mean, I saw children, and people in their late thirties and above, but I didn't see any young adults. It was as if the Pied Piper of Twenty-somethings had stolen the youth of Wexford.
    So true... :(

When Cromwell told the Irish landowners they could go "to hell or to Connacht", it's easy to see why so many opted for the former. For Galway truly is a fate worse than death.

    :D

I live in Mayo its not that bad.I meanits the wild west of ireland. Its like a holiday home central down here at the moment. You cant walk anywhere with tripping over a ugly looking holdiay home.

Sposs he mentions Liffey Valley causing traffic Jams? Muppet.. i live near there and there is never bad traffic in or out of the place.. unlike Blanch. Im very impressed with how they worked the traffic system actually...

Anyway back on Topic.. somewhere out of Dub.. maybe Wicklow or Kerry, Maybe even Mayo or somewhere like that... Somewere nice and quiet.. with broadband of course :D and dark skies... And that i can get to a motorway quick enough and get somewere to buy stuff etc...

Despite it's boggyness, I'd go back to my home country of Kildare

Dunmore East, Passage East and Lismore are three of the nicest Irish villages you are likely to find. Or at least, they are for a few minutes. But whatever you gain from visiting them, you will immediately lose in visiting Waterford City, the biggest eyesore in the southeast. Waterford's mile of grimy quayside is one of the least appetising urban vistas you will find, at least until you get to New Ross.

He he! The piece on my own fair city is rather out of date - those ugly quays be being transformed and the North Quay development looks fab in model form anyway. The authers right about the likes of Lismore etc west waterford is one the Ireland best kept secrets which is a good thing. I'd hate it to end up full of Yankee tourists and posh Dubliners looking for a retreat....

    Mike.

True but thats nothing new.. it was like that long before the centre... its not in the centre anyway its closer to Palmerstown/Cherry Orchard junction... its those lights that cause the problem... Turning right from Palmerstown to go down that road is also a pain... the filter lights last 5 seconds.. litterally!!

Tuscany. Just outside Florence, Siena or Pistoia would be nice.

Nowhere near Livorno though - Pig ugly city that.
