Why San Diego? Heard its nice though. I've only ever passed through it myself. If you get the chance. Visit Monterey theres a Ferrari showroom on the beach. (and a very nice beach) At least there used to be a few years back.

Any advice as to whether this is smart or not?

Its as good a plan as any other! I was there for about 3-4 months when I was 20 or so. Been back a few times though. I'd have said go San Fran myself. My fav US city. What ever you do travel while you're there. Don't get stuck working 24/7 See the whole freaking place. Its hard to get back to the US especially the west coast if you are stuck in a job in Ireland in the future.

Ye i never want to work/live in Ireland for the forseeable future anyway. I want to try and live and work full time in the US if i can.

Do you think its a bad idea for me to go over on my own or will i meet people over there??? I hope to go over, take up a martial art...try interacting.

Ive no idea what to expect...

Kinda lonely on your own especially in somewhere like SD. At least in San Fran or the bigger cities you can find some Irish contacts (in the bars if nowehere esle) who would be likely to give you a hand or point you in the right direction of whats what in the area. That done then strike out on your own by all means. Remember that you'll be considered a foreigner over their. And not everyone in the US loves the Irish. That said when I was their I spent most of my time with yanks, not Irish. though I was with a mate from college. I didn't ever have any hassle. But you need to keep your wits about you. 24/7. Though its quieter up towards San Fran. L.A is another story. Bit hairy down there. Once you get out of the cities its a lot nicer IMO. Try and get to Las Vegas, the national Parks etc.

Best of luck Slim, have a look on the net maybe for Irish communities around San Diego or something like that. Keep organised and get into a routine to keep urself busy :)
