Knoppix Question(s)

    Hi,
just got knoppix and runs fine on 1 of my computers. Then booted it up on the other and when it was just about to load the GUI stage the monitor cuts out. The monitor works fine under Win98SE and it's a digital 14" monitor. Anyone any suggestions? Also on one of the knoppix websites it says u can log into irc.debian.org or irc.openprojects.net and ask questions there but either it's not working right or I'm not doing it right. I installed Mirc on this Win98 laptop and logged into to a random us server or something and then I went to finger typed in irc.openprojects.net and it didn't work, tried the other one too. Am I doing something wrong here?
    Cheers,
    Calman

and chose the option to bypass most HW detection ?

When you do Ctrl-Alt-F1 what video mode etc is listed - and does your monitor work on it (eg 1024 @ 75Hz)

What video card /monitor do you have ???

Have you tried searching the forums on www.knoppix.net ?

Thanx guys. I bypassed most hardware detection and it worked ok cheers. Can u change the resolution of the screen in knoppix when it's booted? Also can u install knoppix on a FAT32 partition and what's the best file system for it?

I assume like all linux distros it requires a Linux ext2 partition along with a swap partition. Have a read on their webpage for the install details? The installer may do it automatically for you in a Mandrake- style or you may have to create the partitions manually. Partition Magic could be your friend here.

Having never used Knoppix sorry I cant be of more help.

    a) boot from CD and use HDD to speed up & hold some settings

K - Knoppix - in the settings somewhere you can setup files on your FAT partition to store settings / home folder / swap file
    eg: a 128mb file called knoppix.swp on c:
You can store your settings (eg: keyboard) there too.

    on boot up type -
    KNOPPIX config=scan home=scan

(Knoppix deliberately does not autoscan - in case of viruses / trojans- Klaus is kinda insistant on this)

You can make a boot floppy and edit the config to the autoscan or you can use the tools on the site to edit the ISO before burning (though you have to be very careful as the file must be exactly the same size)

    b) install on to HDD
there is a batch file to do this - you will need about 3GB free for Knoppix (it is compressed on to the CD) and a swap partition too..
Look on www.knoppix.net for more info on this util - note: the default used to be german settings on hdd install
