Extra memory for G4

Currently running a 733mhz Digital Audio G4 with the latest version of Jaguar, but the GUI still isn't quite as responsive as I'd like - anyone know if I can expect significant performance gains by maxing out the RAM to 1.5gb (currently at a lowly 512mb)?

Also, where's the best place to buy RAM from right now? Got quoted €130 or thereabouts for each 512mb PC133 SDRAM Dimm in Maplin's, which didn't strike me as particularly good value...

cheapest place that I have found for ram is www.welovemacs.com - I managed to get 512k for about $70. Only advice would be to get it shipped standard post. If you have it fedexed, then you'll be chased for the VAT.

Be carefull when buying SDRAM for a Mac G4. All ram is not created equally !! I recently bought 512MB PC133 DIMMs for my G4 for €48 each but they would not work. I suggest you try one of the memory makers like Crucial or Kingston who both have website where you can specify you computer and they will show you the ram you need.

If your Mac has the stock Rage 128 card you could try a GeForce or Radeon to improve matters. 512MB sounds ample to me. I have a Radeon 7500 Card for sale and a Geforce MX2 both 32MB AGP Mac cards if you are interested. GeForce card is DVI and ADC only no 15 pin VGA connector.

I've got a GeForce 2 in there at the moment... I guess I'm just looking for that elusive "snappiness" that OS9.2 had in spades, but doesn't really seem achieveable in X...

I think thats an "undocumented feature" of OS X.

    I have a 1.2GHz G4 with 1GB RAM and a Ti4600 / 128MB Video card, but it's still not as snappy as OS9 on my G4/450/Radeon Cube.

I guess we'll just have to learn to live with it I s'pose
