A week alone in Glasgow.

I'm being shipped off to Glasgow for a week mid July to attend a work conference (which has taken place in the US or far east every other bloody year).

Unfortunately I'm the sole delegate at the conference and I'm looking at having alot of free time in Glasgow city by myself.

Having talked to a couple of Glasgow people on Sat I'm wonder if the collective boards knowledge can come up with some cool things that I might do or cool pubs, clubs restaurants etc to go to while I'm there.

Is it an expensive city? Is it friendly (you hear weird stories)? In general, I'd trust first hand experience anecdotes over a webguide or travel book.

Glasgow is a strange beast of a city. It's fairly cheap, and for the most part I always found people to be pretty decent, but you can go from affluent area to slum simply by crossing the street and walking around the next corner sometimes.

    Areas of note:

    Argyle St.
    Buchannan St.
    Sauchiehall St.

The science museum (across from the SECC*)
    The People's Palace
The Clyde Shipyards (which are miles down the Clyde River and just visible from the SECC)
The Barras (east end during the weekends - watch your wallet though. It's an uber-sized flea market)

There's a wad of other places that I've been to over the years but names are just eluding me. It's too early in the morning for this .....

Oh, and if you like rock/metal music in any way at all, try the "Cathouse" in Glasgow City Centre on Union St. on a Saturday night. It's ..... ehhh ,..... an experience :D;)

Cool thanks a million for that.
I'm staying off Newton St and attending the SECC for the conference.
