Tribes Q&A (long)

I'm creating a new thread because waiting 2 minutes for a page to appear is a little long. If someone wants to say something on UO put it in another post.

Price: I bought mine for $29.99 from Bestbuy here. The game in that store sold out within a day. When they restocked it was then $39.99. EB here sell it for $44.99 I really don't know how much cheaper you can get it, and there is a big scam over here that if a game sells well in it's first week they bump the price up $5-10$ <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/frown.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":(">

Bad Points
Not really bad points but some stuff that you should be aware of before buying.

1. Network/online Multiplayer only.
There is no single player. There are single player training missions, but these are so lame that if you bought the game expecting a single player you would be seriously ****ed off. There are no real bots, and the way the game is played I would be very much surprised if anyone actually created ones that could play the game.

2. No OpenGL support yet.
It's supposed to be due out this month, you believe the number of TNT users that were b1tching about this (all big heads if you ask me <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">). Someone said that when OpenGL comes out it's going to blow away the dumb ass V2 owners and the TNT owners shut up after that (see, big heads<IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">). Just mentioning OpenGL can get you flamed/mailbombed/etc.

3. It's a team game.
There is DM , but it's not that great. If your not into team games, or your brain can't handle it don't play the game. You will only end up p1ssing people off in the game.

4. The a$$hole factor.
Currently the public servers are now a nightmare to play from muppets cheating. They are either changing teams and disrupting by blowing everything up and switching back, or just simply being disruptive (mining ammo stations, wasting resources, blowing up ships as they are about to take off). The voting system to kick people sucks.

In fact this was such a bad, problem that the first MOD out for the game was an ANTI-TK mod which kicks you if you start being disruptive (and a fine mod too I might add).

If you want to get a good game you have to play on Tribal servers or know the people you are playing with. Even with team damage off (which is what all the public servers are now) it doesn't stop someone from disrputing the game if they so wish.

Also someone has it in for the game, as last weekend some muppet flooded everyone off the IRC server so the Tribes couldn't connect. No big deal to people used to IRC muppets but I saw over 40 people get booted in the space of 10 minutes and couldn't get back on. I believe there is now a contract out on this guys head <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

5. Joystick support.
There is limited joystick support which is an addon patch. I know they are working on a better one, but if your a joystick fanatic you may want to check up on the game.

6. Editor.
There is a free editor with the game. Which is hidden in the software. It's not the best. I think they are working on a better one which will be released but I dont know. Anyway it's still pretty impressive.

Good Points
1. No Lag
Lag is non-exsistant. I've heard of people on T1 lines getting lag, but the game was configured to look after the modem muppets so the defaults are for modems (finally) and you have to play with the settings for network.

2. Large teams
Finally a 20 aside game where you don't have to play by mail to get anywhere. Even in multiplay with up to 4 teams is pretty cool (4 teams of 8-10 people).

3. The variations of play.
Because you can choose from different types of armor, weapons, airships, etc, each person tends to gravitate to the role they like. Some people like being the flyboys having ariel battles or ferrying heavy assult teams to dust off points. Other snipers, Saboteurs, heavy weapons, base defense. There also people who set up and create forward bases (you can set up a remote inv station with jammers and pulse sensors, turrets the works). Then you have people who prefer the base defenses playing with all the cool remote turrets and missile launchers at there command. And lastly you have the commander who can oversee the battle and issue commands to various fireteams. Anyone see Aliens 2 where they were sitting in the APC watching the TV screens and radar of the marines. It's like that <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

4. Editing.
I like the fact that when you take over a base, every logo you see can change to your clans, so the nifty logo drawn in metal on the runway could have your logo <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> Also the levels are extremly fast loading and as long as the terrain (ground just) doesn't change you can modify a level every week and people wouldn't have to worry about load times.

5. MOD's.
There are already Mods out for it (Anti-TK patch, Landscape, Weapons patches) and they are supposed to be easy to do. As long as there are no model changes everything again is server side and is not noticable in load time.

6. Teamplay.
I can't stress this how cool it makes it. I was in a game where a commander requested that I drop an inv station in the rat ar$e of no where. I do this then lay down a turret which the commander then controls to watch my back as I set up sensor jammers and pulse sensors to detect the enemy, as I'm doing this a HPC comes in with Heavy armor guys who then set up more inv stations, turrets, they then load up on Mortors and bombed the hell out of the enemy base. Because of all the prep work they couldn't get near us to do any damage. It took a serious amount of sniper fire to even dent us enough for them to attack.

Ok that's my all for now <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> I have no idea when they are selling it international. It was supposed to be the UK on the 12th. Check in the local shops and ask. Oh yea you don't need the CD in the drive to play, also I dont think it's like halflife, but you never know.

Shame there isn't an ignore function in this board like there is in IRC, wouldn't have to listen to you.

The only thing amazing is how you post just to insult me. This envy or something... no wait I really don't want to know.

As I said before: IWANNIT IWANNIT!

I showed the screeny to my brother (who is anti-quake btw) and he went nuts. So, if it I can manage it soon you can expect two more players. I love the idea of it, especially the mandatory teamplay function and the idea of a 'central command' that organises the strategy end.

Just to be clear, it IS on sale here but you have to connect to a server outside Ireland to play. That right?

By international game, does that mean servers in other countries , the game in other languages <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> or what?

Please excuse my ignorance.

hmmm, now who do I know that a:would play and b: what would they be best at?..... Something to think about.

J.
