Why are the BCI giving four new stations to Dublin.

    What about another National station.

Dublin has too many Radio Stations

    RTE One
    2FM
    Lyric FM
    RnaG
    Today FM
    98fm
    fm104
    spin103
    newstalk106
    country fm
    lite fm

    There is space for Phantom.

There has been a lot of poaching of former Phantom staff in recent weeks to Today FM and 2fm, but still they play alt music in late night slots. What I want is a alt music channel all day!

i have always wondered this. are the rest of the country not in need of a few new stations. a new rock music station would be nice but it will never happen :(

The spectrum would really only allow for 5 national networks, and thats what we have. Better spectrum management, and you might squeeze one more in.

And with the trouble Today FM (as Radio Ireland) and Century had, they wont licence another national station.

My solution to you Mossy, is to blow up Wicklow. :)

What I want to know is, why does Belfast have so few? I'm sure the Radio Authority could fit another one in.

There are only two independent FM stations (Cool FM and Citybeat) plus Downtown on 1026 AM.

Surely it would be better if they gave licences to One more new National station rather then 4 dublin ones.

Also why did they get rid of the north eastern radio station and replace it with an new one, Ocean FM, could they not leave the local radio stations alone and add another one?

    Good point, Elmo
Same thing here in Sligo with Northwestradio.

No, its not the North East, its all happening in Sligo based station, NWR only.

Check out the North West regional board, there is a good discussion on that over there.

Has Radio Killkenny gone as well because of Beat?

I thought Ocean FM was taking over from the Local Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo and Rosscommon radio stations?

Edit: in my last post i meant North Western Area not North Eastern.

When are we going to see DAB in this fair country?

    Mike.

No, Radio Kilkenny is going, but not because of Beat.

CKR in Carlow/Kildare is going, as well as Radio Kilkenny to be replaced by a Kildare station, and a Carlow/Kilkenny station. Beat is a new service that covers the whole south east, and its a youth station, not replacing anything.

Wheareas in the North West, the BCI awarded the Franchise for South Donegal, Sligo and North Leitrim to Ocean FM, and the opened a can of worms, as in the application, Ocean said that the NWR listeners were old and of a lower social class. Now the "auld biddies" protested last sunday in Sligo. Take a look at the North West board for more info. The old folk up there are hacked off, but the main reason the BCI went with Ocean FM is that NWR take a lot of their programming from MWR in Claremorris, their sister and co-owned station. The BCI wanted an independent Silgo station, but the listeners dont seem to get that.

On a side note, Roscommon and South Leitrim is covered by Shannonside.

Oddly TV3 takes most of its programming from its sister station in Britian. You'd think they'd want a more Irish Indo TV station first before worring about Radio stations taking some of there out put from other Irish radio stations.

I think that Ocean FM were stupid to put in their application that NWR listeners were old and of a lower social class, how not to gain listners. When writting business proposals its best to use something like the listners of NWR are from the 55 to 75 age group and tend to come from small low income household, we want to make money so we will aim our radio station towards the lovely 15 - 45 year old age group. :D
