In the states (where I am now) I can lookup the value of cars on www.kbb.com or www.nada.org. Is there anything similar for Ireland or the EU? The problem is I am returned to Ireland and looking to buy a cheapish but decent car. I have my eye on a 98 Fiat Maera estate for 3.5k right now but I have no idea what the blue book on it is?

Unfortunetly, there is no guide book currently available, to the general public, for used car prices in the Republic of Ireland.

Autoexpress, the weekly UK magazine, did have an Irish (Republic) used car price guide available for a brief period last year.

A good way to check out the current asking prices for used cars here is to look at vehicles advertised in the tri-weekly free ads paper - Buy & Sell (www.buyandsell.ie).

    Regards,
    Silvera.

Garages and Traders can buy "The Car Sales Guide " but are bound not to give the values to the public , also they have to send back old issues to get the new ones ..

I happen to have "come by" January 2003's issue and according to this yeo are paying approx €1000 less than book value for a minter .

The car sold before I could get my money sorted out, I think it was a good deal. I did a little digging and Fiats seem to lose their value fairly quickly but are a pretty decent car.
Any suggestions on a good 4 door 1.4L to 1.6L car in the 3.5k to 4.5k range? Doesn't have to be flashy, just enough to get me to work and back and generaly take myself and my wife and son around?
I have a Ford Focus Wagon(estate) here in the states which I love as a family car, they are much more expensive in Ireland though.
I also found an insurance broker who says they deal with an insurance company who has taken US insureance company no claims discounts which if it works will save me around Euro2000, if it does work I will post the details here for any returning immigrants like me.

You should be able to get a mid-nineties Honda Civic at that sort of money afaik. Toyota Corolla would be a similar story. Both would be dependable and economical to run. You could consider a Ford Escort too - that kind of money would get you into a '98 car at this stage.

'98 Marea? Couple of hundred if it's got some window decoration (tax and nct).

the Marea question was asked 6 years ago you
    nonce!

"Book" Value on the 99 Corolla is somewhere between 1000-1250 (book doesn't go back that far)

Thats crazy! you wont buy a decent 00 corolla for anything less than 2.5k. I really hope they offer me more than that

    I sold a 00 Corolla 4dr about 3 mths ago for 2600 with similar mileage (92k). Sold a 01 Corolla 3dr a week ago for 3200.

About 2 wks ago the insurance company paid out 1300 on a 96 Corolla 4dr to a friend of mine. Car was NCT'ed for 2 years but otherwise only fair condition. I sold him that car about 3 years ago for around 2000, so I'd say he did all right from the insurance !
