    Hi,
I had an idea to buy Windows 2000 Server and set up a little network to mess around with but I found out it's about a grand to buy, NT4 Server near the same. So Linux/Unix is free right, so where do I download it and how big is it and can I get it somewhere on disk? I don't know anything much about Linux/Unix by the way.

DistroWatch has a list of the various distributors and what's so different about each here

For example, RedHat 9 (latest version of RH) is a 3 disk install, although this may vary between distros.

Several distributions sell boxed copies, although Eason & Co. happily inflate the cost of these. Best bet is to d/l them or get someonie to burn you a copy on CD/DVD

Most of the people here will burn CD's or DVD's for you for free, trade or cost. I'd recommend Red Hat or FreeBSD for a server, Red Hat would probably be most suitable for a newbie. I'd send you Red Hat myself but I only have 9 on DVD and I've no DVD burner.

    How do I get/setup a Linux/Unix server?

Sacrifice small animals, to various gods.
The god of MTAs the god of Mailman, the god of Apache, the six headed hydra lilo beast

    and such forth.

Lo betide he who spurns sacrifical hommage to the gods of Unix.

Or install Mandrake. Simple and lots of automagic configuration.

Be warned, steep learning curve will ensue, but, if you are determined enough, to go the Linux route, it is ultimately worth it....

and the sacrificing of small furry things over servers at the wee small hours of the morning brings (it's own) rewards in the afterlife.

I for example .... shall rule Australia, in my next life.

    Slackware!

Just remember you still have to pay for extra client licenses and if you use IIS to share to the internet AND validate passwords it's another two grand - and loads of other licenses are needed for exchange ISA proxy SQL etc. etc. - in fact with 2003 there could be lots of more licence categories..
also you have to buy the licenses all over again every three years - it is not an investment

No - just get a copy of Knoppix - and cluster knoppix too - bootable CD so no risk - and if you like it you can use a "batch file" to copy it to a 4GB partition.. (it's debian)

Alternatively if you have other versions of windows - Apache is free - DHCP is free - search for my posts :) - and no one in their right mind would trust a M$ firewall - especially when you can hide it behind a 486 running smoothwall etc..

    Sizes: ftp.heanet.ie/pub/knoppix - 700 MB (it' a CD)
or you can look for versions that fit on a single floppy :)
    or check cover disks ....

Cheers. Can I use knoppix as a server, and if I can can I log into it from windows platforms?

Just ordered knoppix off the Linux Emporium. Once I get it is it easy enough to use or do I need to check out some websites or books?

    no worries.
Debian is sweet, if you have broadband apt-get is the handiest thing in the world

"apt-get install apache sendmail qpopper ssh"

and boom, you have a fully functional free server:D
