In UK the BBC hold the rights to the tv licence and therefore are not allowed to advertise which is why there are no breaks between programmes.
In that case RTE shouldn't be allowed to have ads or if they are not happy with that TV3 should get rights to licence and then they shouldn't advertise.

60 million people live in the UK, 3.5 million in Ireland.

The BBC make enough money on TV licenses alone, RTE never will. To be fair on RTE, they do keep their advertising to a fairly unintrusive minimum.

Dutch public broadcasters also have advertising, as do the Italians.

Technically since last changes here both TG4 and TV3 get some licence money too. I think up to 10% is available to any irish broadcaster for local independant production.

the one major thing i hate about RTE is their ad-breaks during the news!
hardly watch RTE except the news.

You can add the Germans and Austrians to that list as well, both of whom have far higher licence fees as well. According to http://www.obs.coe.int/about/oea/pr/service_public.html, the Austrian TV licence fee in 2000 was EUR220, while in Germany it was EUR173.

I have nothing against RTE advertising. I just wish they put some thought into where they stuck the ads. When watching a film, I do not want to be halfway through a tense scene and then suddenly informed about the levitation-like effects of Red Bull. It's not asking too much for a bit of common sense, is it?

Can't remember how much the licence fee in France is, but the tv channels are allowed to show ad's as well, and there are way too many ad's! The only good thing though is that they are limited to about 2 ad breaks an hour (I guess), so no Sky-style ad breaks all over the place, and there are NO ad breaks in the middle of a film or news programme.

But that is the point. If you have a scene that is tense, then comes the ad break, you are more likely to stick with that and watch the ads, than switch over and miss a bit.

    Thats marketing, folks.

The most irritating thing about RTE and Ad breaks IMHO is when that women comes at the start of the ad break for a film to whisper "Aero - can't wait for more!"

It often completely spoils the mood!

It might be marketing but the wrong kind for me , because i will zap away in the imaginary knowledge that they might detect how many people zap during ad-breaks.

That and the fact that RTE seem incapable of cutting to ads properly - they almost always loose some dialogue and spoil the mood.

RTE never stop goin on about having no resourses and very little cash to either buy or make any decent programmes.
Just think what it would be like if they lost their advertising revenue.

if they cut the wages of their "superstars" then i would probably agree with them on having no money

Did you ever notice the amount of ad breaks on during a football match? At half time they have two full breaks in fifteen minutes. Even one minute before the kick off they show about two ad's. TV3 don't even show that many ad's during a football match.

I dont know where you do be watching.... 2 ad breaks is standard, on any channel. Sky, ITV, TV3... all the same.

Sky also have a quick one before kick-off too.

I think N2 should just show adds and become their commerical broadcaster. But then theres The Den which is going to loss it adds. Its only since friends started that the show adds during american sitcoms there was a time you could even watch friends without an add break.

Do you ever notice when they show Sibreana (sp) the Teenage witch they dont show adds during it on the den but on ID they do.
