You know that age old computer dream ... Computer pisses you off, you attack computer with hammer/other heavy blunt instrument...

Herein Follows my experience, may I warn readers the following should not be tried, and this extract contains violent mental imagery.

Company wanted to destroy 30 odd Hard-Drives, and gave me a hammer+nail to go at them with [and eye goggles thanks be to feic]. Well found the nail was useless on all hard disks [except Seagate who provide a nice hole in over where disk platter resides, covered by sticky-foil].

So after much use of nail to little avial, decided best I could do was beat crap outta hard-disks raving-lunatic-style!
Please note ; chips/circuitry does leave the disk at an alarming rate and speed - and will travel a distance!

Well after several cuts and bruises later, also note the hard disk does tend to jump up after a strike and smack you in face if not careful [have the dents and sore face to proove].

Here is my report on Hard-Disk reliability/structural integrity.

Worst by far of hard-disks is seagate.
Besides the provided hole over the disk...they tend to break in half after a few blows of a hammer...quite scary sight to see - shame not have digital camera with me, would make some nice shots lol.
IBM is next in line, where the outter-casing more or less falls apart after some more blows.
Quantom fireball I found had mixed results, from complete bendage, to being one of the most resiliant.

Runner up is the Western Digital, which does sweet feic all after 5mins of beating with a hammer. Only downside is the whole base of the hard disk is circuitry, which can be broken after a while [also considerably resiliant]

Winner has to be the Maxtor however.
Had bout 5 of em ... where i could do really nothing to apart from get rid of my rage...beating them around with the hammer, and they end up doing more damage smacking me in face/ribs each time.
/me submits this idea to Jackass ... lol

Well this was highlight of my employment so far - apart from blisters/scratches/bruises/general soreness lol.
Feel free to use results when buying your next hard disk if you feel it may be liable to be beaten around with a hammer, otherwise ignore this post and continue on your monotonous day :)

    Haha brilliant.

Sounds like you have some awesome job, sit around all day surfing the net. Then the one day they ask you to do something its beat the living crap out of some hard disks.

I find the best way to brake hard drives is to give them to your sister to mind and tell here they are extremely fragile and not to damage them.

thats no joke people. have you any idea of the destructive capabilities of a sister!
i only have 1, think you have 2 or 3 Tom, so be wary.
my sister borrowed my laptop, came back to me saying, "your cd spinny thing doesn't work".
she destroy the spinal on my cd drive

Sinnocence, you don't happen to work in the AIB do you, while I was there they gave me crowbar and sent me down to the basement with it, gogo in nice suit was thinking very odd thoughts going to basement with crowbar (didn't know what they wanted me to do you see).

Either way was one of the best days I think i had there, hopping the shlt outta hard drives is a really soul cleansing stuff. Offered myself up for any job in the basement there after, The ammount of stuff they throw out is unbelieveable (sp). monitors, pc's keyboards, mice. loads of hardware.
Oh fond memories of all 'borrowed' hardware I got.

    gogo

sister broke yer portable coffee holder - not good ;(

Nope, don't work for aib - Canada Life lol
suit ? ah i just wear shirt-tie [just about] ... except when casual friday and the nerdy t-shirts come out [got mass-slagged today - surrounded by 7 guys in tech department slagging me for nerdiness & one not getting the joke - depressing...]

Well my experience breaking hard-drives not as fun, as they fought back - especially those maxtor ones *shakes fist*
stupid things bounce ... na they told me to go to computer room to do it - really made sense
bits of hard drive flying round the room [and smacking me ofc too]

not rewarding when beat HD for 5mins w/ hammer and has no effect, cept crippling me lol
have another 15 to do - putting it off due to pain tolerance levels however.

wuss. pain is not an option, when you have a hammer or crowbar in your hand

maybe you need to plan your strikes rather than just beat the f**k out of it, hit the corners and places where things meet. but the violent way is more fun

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,459 ✭✭✭seanos

hitting corners makes it bounce more - and does little damage, since corners are most robust part.

hitting centre is best option, as is weakest - yet still suprisingly strong ;/

and regardless where you hit it bounces, so it's case of limiting the bounce-factor®©

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 355 ✭✭Headcase

maybe you need 2 hammers. second to hit it in mid air after bouncing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,459 ✭✭✭seanos

company on money-saving budget - only allowed one hammer per task ;(
next week they'll start taking away people's right-mouse buttons as it encourages un-productiveness

my computer in work is a piece of crap. and as for the mouse. after being in Carlow and using an infra red mouse. i hate using ball mice now.

had to bring my own in from home [lucky had spare or still be using keyboard shortcuts ...]
