I've done it in Greece a few times and picked up some bargains, but I wouldn't be too optimistic about trying it from Dublin. I know that a lot of airlines now add a 'ticket on departure' fee for tickets bought at departure which can effectively wipe out any saving you made.

I think it all comes down to checking the prices in advance, so you know which flights are empty and not being too fussy about where/when you go.

Dublin airport isn't exactly a hub so I'd miagien you'd be pretty lucky to get any last-minute flights.

Aer Lingus are still overbooking so I'd imagine you probably won't get anything at all from them.

Almost every airline in the world overbooks where at all possible, according to values that are statically worked out, a certain percentage of the people will never show up and they know this and over book to the point where they are making more money than the chance of someone not fitting on the plane. Fun statisctics we worked out the other day as part of an exam.
