Bootable CD which treats your hard drive as read only - with about 2GB of utils waiting for your perusal on the desktop.

Boot it up - change the keyboard (us flag) to UK
K - Settings - Desktop Wizard - choose Ireland & Windows (or Mac or preferred ) Desktop

    And that's it ..

If you want to edit microsoft office docs - right click on the drive and turn off the read-only..

700MB download - migt find older versions on cover disks

Mandrake or SuSE are good with the GUI stuff.

Any distro with a recent version of KDE or Gnome should be fine for someone used to GUIs. KDE is slightly closer to Windows, imho.

Seeing as you have the Knoppix CD, why not install that on your harddisk?
It's a genuine Debian system without the confusion of the current Debian installer for someone unused to it.

It has a load of software pre-configured that would take you some time to get together on a fresh install.

The Knoppix hardware installer is the best that I've seen to date - beating even Mandrake which is great for laptops.

Added to that, the components have been checked for conflicts, and if it all goes belly up, you can re-install the same desktop in a moment from CD.

There's no comparison between the speed of Knoppix running from Harddisk and from CD.

There is a menu item on the Knoppix desktop to install to hardisk - DON'T USE IT unless you want a German install.

Hold down CTRL-ALT and F2 to get a root terminal.
    Type in
knx-hdinstall (I think that's it - type 'knx' and then hit TAB a few times, it'll show up)
and you'll be able to install in english.

The installer might look a bit scary, and if it warns you about losing data, read very carefully what data it's going to remove. It goes through every step needed though, and when you restart, you're back in the X window system.

If you've enough space on your drive (Knoppix needs 2.5G for an install and maybe 400M for swap depending on how much RAM you have) this will give you a very full desktop linux install with minimal effort.

I haven't used knoppix to resize partitions to make space, a Mandrake bootable CD is probably best for that. You may have empty space on a partition, or you may have partition magic.

    Good luck with it,
    NiallB
