Gavin Polone's Pariah is bringing the acclaimed British comedy series "Father Ted" to the United States. NBC-based Pariah has teamed with London-based Hattrick Prods., the producer of "Father Ted", which ran on Channel 4 for three years, to create an American version of the show and has recruited Emmy-nominated writer-producer Spike Feresten to adapt the original series. "Father Ted" marks the second collaboration between Pariah and Hattrick. Their first project, "The Ortegas", based on Hattrick's hit comedy series for BBC "The Kumars at No. 42", landed on the fall Fox schedule.

Yea, I saw Payne alright, it used to be on ITV at coming home from the pub pished time.

Even with 7 Smithwicks in me and half a kebab, it still wasn't funny.

Can some op move this post?

Speaking about late night telly, whatever happened to 'The End'(which was on RTE) I thought it was great stuff, why was it pulled?

They'll try anything to avoid thinking up a new idea, its the same as the way most old tv shows are been made into movies, it sucks.

Why dont they just play the old ones?
Whats the point in remaking them?
    Seems pretty stupid to me.

I wish they would not make programs like that. They should just show the origional and if people do not get the humour how do they expect them to enjoy the remake.

That remake of faulty towers was absoutly awfull. It had most of the carachters but none of the humour.

Ah but the joy comes out of a committee spoiling it:

"We've got this great idea for a TV series. We've licensed it from this European series"
    /shows a few episodes
"That looks great, we'll show that. Mind if we make a few changes?"
    "Er, no. Like what?"
"We'll, we'll have to have a few minorities in there. Let's see, that Mrs Doyle woman is now Rosalita Perez, a feisty Latino coffee maker"
    "Erm, OK"
"Now, an African-American character. Can't have him be the idiot youngster, they won't have that. Or the old geezer. Actually, dump the old geezer, nothing sexy there. Let's make our Ted an African American"
    "Hmmm, I suppose"
"Now, the youngster will have to be a woman, so we'll have to dump the Catholic idea. Actually, we'll make it an inner-city Episcopalian parish. Makes more sense, doesn't it?"
    "Erm..."
"It's the only way we'll make this series"
    "OK then, makes sense!"
"Actually, scrub the church idea. No money in it since Father Dowling went down the tubes. Let's set it in a small New York household where the dad is a doctor with some feisty kids, a lawyer for a wife and a different coloured sweater every day"
    "Er, OK"
"Just another thing. Does the main character have to be called Ted? If we change the name we might be able to get Bill Cosby on board"

Heard this a few years ago but it was a different company making it.
UK remakes have often went down poorly in the US.For a start only cable stations like HBO can easily have swearing in them. While the simpsons somehow manages to have words like bastard in episodes in general a big stink would be kicked up over the language in our Father Ted.
Found this on the BBC-presumably the plan was shelved seeing as the story was posted in april 2001

The austrailian are doing a version of the Kumars as are the Americans. They've gone as low as coping chat shows.

I am looking forward to the american version of Path To Freedom.

American Version of Father Ted!! NO NO Say it can't be true

Im a serious Father Ted fan and cant get enough of it, so any extra promotion for father ted is good IMHO.

Would we really have a tribute to father ted on this same forum if not for the announcement of the american version.

At least this way, father ted's genius wont be forgotten too quickly.

Speaking as a pure fan though, Ill always prefer the orignal series to anything else, No matter how good.
