What is the deal with this from the Irish Times yesterday? Has anyone any info on this new service that the BBC are supplying?

Why could you not post this in the existing thread?

    From that article:
RTÉ management is concerned that viewers will lose the habit of watching RTÉ channels because of the new service. However, its impact is expected to be more long-term than immediate. The station said yesterday that Government or EU intervention might be needed on this issue.
If RTE made a mistake, by being love bombed by Sky for Sky's financial benefit, when they decided to take the carrot of getting on the EPG for free but limited to the Family pack and tied to a sky sub...
Thats their own fault, why should the government or the E.U step in to rescue them from the fruits of their own lack of foresight and their own bad management decision.
They should start negotiating common rights with other channels for pan UK and ROI rights, so as they can be seen in the UK as much as here.
If that means, something similar to the Canada / U.S situation, ie simulcasting programmes, instead of rushing to have them first, then so be it imho.
But they'd be better off rising to the competition and putting out more home produced stuff, and leaving the UK programmes on the UK channels, all of which will eventually be , or are already available here.

thats about as likely to happen as the motorways between major irish cities being built before 2007

please tell me there is no way rte can get this blocked

IMHO there is no way RTE can block the Beeb's plans. The Beeb is way too big and powerful, and have already got Sky to cave in in a lot of ways. They may negotiate a bit with RTE, but they may just as easily tell them to get knotted.
