a mate of mine's lock recently broke in his car (audi a4) and so he took it off to the menders. anyway - they put in s different lock to the others so now he has one key for the drivers door and another for the passengers and boot. is this completely wrong??! i mean would it not (should they not've done) have been better to get the lock copied or get the same one and put it in?

Depends on the car afaik - I know with Ford locks (the little hexagonal ones), new locks come as a kit which is then assembled to suit your existing key. I know this from having to replace a worn out cylinder in the boot lock of a '93 Escort.

It took two hours to get the boot open and about 10 mins to fit the lock

if he went to a dealer he should've been given a matching replacemnt, what he probably got was a lock from a breakers
