    Hi there,

Just got a kick ass DVD player and Home Entertainment system as a present so I'm looking for suggestions of DVD's to watch that will bring out the best in the system. Something with good music and sound effects.

Watched The Matrix with it (even though we'd seen it before) and it kicked ass!!!
8 Mile was also good for the system but I kept waiting for it to go somewhere and alas it never happened.

    any suggestions please?

Thin Red Line looks and sounds class. Excellent movie too, if it's your cup of tea.

Weird - thought I'd already replied to this.

Anyway, for showing off home cinema systems, a couple of suggestions would be "Monsters, Inc", "Star Wars Episodes I & II", and "Shrek", because none of these films have touched film on their way to your DVD player, so you have a pretty much flawless transfer. The animated films generally have a much more dynamic soundtrack - perfect for showing off your surround system.

Other good "demo" discs include the remake of "Planet of the Apes" (you might not like the plot, but it has incredible sound and visuals), "Terminator 2" (The DTS mix rocks so hard) and Jurassic Park, if even only for that one bit, showing off your subwoofer. You know the bit I'm talking about.

Agreed. Monsters inc is officially the best "sound" DVD currently availible with DTS ES soundtrack. Also Saving privete Ryan & LOTR. I find the matrix sound quality pretty week... it's not even DTS.

this should be in technology under home entertainment but any way, star wars, independence day, fast and the furious, the new akira 2 disc set has got good sound, spider man, x-men

Why should it be in Home Entertainment?

Anyway, if you're not bothered by dvd extras, you could check out some Superbit dvds.
Basically all the extras have been taken away to dedicate all the space on the disc to enhance the film. So you get better picture and better sound quality.
