If you'd asked me last year, I would have said Richard Harris. I want to say Gabriel Byrne....but he seems to have fallen from grace. I'm stumped. I'm forgeting the king dammit.....

    daniel day lewis

    Daniel Day Lewis isnt Irish.
For me the best Irish actor has to be either Cillian Murphy or Brendan Gleeson.

    Liam Neeson by a mile

Unfortunately, technically neeson isn't irish either. Otherwise he'd definitely have my vote alright.

What qualifies an actor as Irish then? Do they have to be from south of the border? If that's the case I pick Colin Farrell, he's been doing well lately.

actually, close enough... i vote for liam neeson!

Ignoring my opinion that Day-Lewis can be Irish if he wants to be (& has been an irish citizen since 1993), both Lennox Lewis and Daniel Day-Lewis were born in London (29 Apr 1957 and 2 Sept 1965 respectively). Lewis moved to Canada when eh was a wee nipper (which explains why he boxed for there). Hence Lewis is as British as any other individual who happens to have been born in London to an immigrant family (more British than Britain's other sporting hero with Canadian connections in other words)

Well if you take performances in a movie:

Richard Harris in way way so many

    Gabriel Byrne in Millers Crossing

Stephen Rae in The Crying Game

Brenda Fricker in my Left Foot

    Liam Neeson in Schindlers List

Cillian Murphy in Disco Pigs or 28 Days later

Colin Farrell in Tigerland or Phonebooth

    Colin Meaney in The Snapper

Brendan Gleeson in I Went Down or The General

Pierce Brosnan in Thomas Crown affair, deffo not the Bond movies

I don't think that Hollywood success is the best measure of acting ability! Having said that I think that Colin Farrell is possibly one of the brightest stars to come out of Ireland in a while...in any sector of the entertainment industry...he has a talent for picking parts that suit his ability, which highlights his skill!

My vote is for Colin, however there are a number od others that deserve a mention....Brendan Gleeson, Pierce?...I think he merits it! Richard Harris was made to play Dumbledore! And Cillian Murphy was very watchable in 28 days later!

    Liam Neeson, methinks.

Is Brenda Fricker Irish? She was good in My Left Foot, as was Dan Day-Lewis

And um.. lets get off the race evangalism buzz. If you're a citizen then you are what is commonly known as Irish.

No, wearing a red beard and green clothes and saying "Top o the mornin'" doesn't make you Irish.

Anyone for a good ole cross burning?

    Liam 'coolest jedi ever' Neeson

Daniel Day Lewis is no more Irish than i am English, he is like 1/8 Irish and lived in Ireland for a few years, like myself i'm 1/8 English and lived in England for like five years.

But if we're judging the actor by the respective citizenship they hold. A lot of the aforementioned Irish actors like Gabriel Byrne, Liam Neeson, Pierce Brosnan, the fat guy off star trek and Colin Farrell ply their trade in the states so if we put Caesars rule of probability into practice, it will tell us that at least one of the aforementioned actors claims American citizenship, thus ruling him out of the thread.

But if this was the best irish character in a movie, the winner would obviously be Mickey the Pikey.
