IOL provide modem whether you want it or not

    I was on the phone to IOL asking them if they could hold onto the modem they provide as I have my own modem/router. The girl on the phone said that I will get the modem whether I want it or not as its the only one that they suport. So if I have a problem with my connection, I have to swap from my modem/router to my IOL modem just to qualify for IOL support. That seems very inflexible to me. Surely if your connection works with a different modem or router, then they will have to support that. It seems odd to me that they are insisting that I take the modem when I have told them that they can hold onto it and I will still pay the same monthly rental.

    use the IOL modem as a lightning detector in the summer.

    If the lights on it go off then ring them and say 'oops there was some lightning around'

    ha ha, yeah, that ain't a bad idea. do yourself a favour and go with clicksilver. they're tech support is meant to be the best

    What does it matter? Leave it in the box and dont open it.. if your one does go down then you have a backup! As for supporting other hardware.. they would not have training on how to configure all modems and routers... Hell IOL is home user and not supposed to be shared over a router

    It doesn't really matter too much whether I get the modem, but I would have rather have had the option of getting the modem as opposed to having no choice. Even Eircom give you that choice! Whats more, I would like to pay less rental if I choose not to get the modem. As for my modem/router, I will be using the router to have my PC and Xbox connected at the same time, but not necessarily being used at the same time. It saves switching over the cable.

    I was going to go with Clicksilver but I didn't want to move the phone over as well. Ideally I want a separate bill for BB and phone.

    Man, I be more worried about when IOL are going to connect you. I'm still waiting for line activation and my modem. I don't know if its because of Eircom or them, but i want my broadband.

    I am sure they will blame Eircom. Its easier for them that way. Saying that, it would be in Eircoms interest to connect their own i-stream people first before catering for a rivals customers. Makes their package look good in that its connected within the 15 days specified.

    I wouldn't mind if it took another week or 2. I just want to know when. I feel like my broadband is in limbo, waiting for some pencil pusher to fill an order for activation. Sure i had problems with eircom over this crap.

    They told me i be connectted on a certain date. Date arrives but no connection. I ring up and they make it seem that i made the date up and give me a new one. The cycle then repeats, until i told them if they didn't connect me by them i would cancel the order and go with a rival.

    BTW, the i first date i was given was after the 12 working days.
