One of the current releases from Census 2002 includes a breakdown by religion, look at tables 33-34 (towards the end) here: http://www.cso.ie/census/pdfs/pdr_2002.pdf

I am disgusted and appalled that Trekker was not mentioned. We of the Brethern of the red shirted ensigns shall make our voice be heard next census.

It was interesting that only 5-600 claimed to be atheists and that all the major Christian denominations grew.

Lots of non-practising and non-religious types though.

The Book of Mormon is no more nutty than the Bible in terms of message and story. It *is* very badly written though. I came across some Mormons in the street last week, and while they were irritating (in the way any evangelical believer who wants to convert you is) they were quite friendly people. The bolt of lightning story sounds very unmormon, though.

Of coarse it is, but it is a stupid suggestion.

Why not have a box for monotheistic religions and a box for those ummm multideity people. That will make it nice and concise.
And for good luck a don't know/atheist box.

    Hi lads.

This is a warning to say that this thread is running dangerously off the mandate of this forum.

If you want to discuss the best way to construct a census, I would suggest the Politics forum.

    Regards,
    Dave

Fair enough. I've been talking to the Census folks about the breakdown of religion in their preliminary results from the last census. It's rather interesting. I'v been thinking of making a boards posting about it; I could put it on Politics, but would then like to post a link to it here. To this thread or to another, as you like. (Do tell.)

The relevance is that there are a great many "non-Catholic" varieties of Christianity which are hard to classify. Note that when I use the word "Catholic" in this sense I refer to the tradition of ordination and confirmation by laying on of hands by bishops in the apostolic succession. That definition would precede the split between the Roman and Byzantine Churches, and it would precede the later split between the Roman and the Anglican churches. Thus one may speak of the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Catholic Church, and the Orthodox Catholic Churches, because all of these maintain the apostolic succession, whereas true Protestant churches do not.

As this thread wandered far, far off topic, I've split it in two as best I could.

The other topic is in another thread, which could have been titled: "Islam = Christianity + Mohammed?", but wasn't.
