ICDG , Your Country Needs You (Comreg Reallocating MMDS Bands )

The Comreg proposal is Here (18 pages PDF 200k or so)

The MMDS bands are due to be handed over to 3G in 2008 or so. Comreg has some considerable discretion in this and is considering doing so in Urban areas while maintaining MMDS in Rural areas (splitting the frequency according to population density in effect) . They are considering similar steps witha bit of the GSM 1800 frequency, I posted my thoughts in the IoffL market issues folder.

I am sure that ICDG could manage a submission on this...I'd be interested in hearing what Watty thinks of the Comreg plan seeing as he has posted his own in here in the past. Comreg dont appear interested in using MMDS bands for DTTV from what I can see.

One alternative would be to move all MMDS services to the 10-12GHz (or scrap MMDS altogether ???)

There have been several proposals for 12GHz MMDS before (one ironically from the Southcoast deflector group) but there was some disagreeement among engineers about whether or not it would be possible for satellite and terrestrial MMDS to coexist on this band. There are also economic considerations (more sites would be needed to provide the same level of coverage)

10Ghz is suitable only for relay links (and good too since same size solid dish as MMDS open mesh gives three times the range at same power). Insane for MMDS as it is very Line of Sight.

Really nothing above 3 or 4GHz should be used for terrestrial mulitpoint. The 5 GHz WiFi have proved MUCH less robust for reception than 2.4, thpugh again good for relays or open plan office as it is VERY fast.

It will be interesting to see if any operators actually want to offer 3G. Multiple slot TDM, GPRS and HDCS etc all extend speed of GSM network. GPRS users have found the data transfer costs of GPRS VERY high (can work out more costly than Nokia 9210 browsing via "straight" GSM). 3G costs will be higher.

Really the existing system can't support Audio or Video Streaming or big downloads, but 3G it turns out is not much better
(It is like 33K dialup versus 64K ISDN, for "decent" streaming and downloads you need ADSL/Broadand, which 3G isn't).

The 3G handsets will be very expensive too.

The metropolitan WiFi/WAN standards and Wifi802.11x standards have surpassed 3G in cheapness, speed, availability etc.

A "3G sized" handset with GSM, bluetooth and WiFi can be got which 3G only phones, Nokia 9210s and phoneless Palm piolots look a bit silly.

Operators are looking to see how to include public 802.11 Wifi in billing.

Meanwhile the Irish WAN group ( http://www.irishwan.org/ ) meats in Limerick Sat 28th June:

Chorus has put a lot of City/Town subscribers on Digital MMDS rather than upgrade cable to Digital.

That kind of messes Comreg's idea. (which would almost only apply to Dublin and Cork City anyway).

Including quite a few estates around Limerick, Cork and Mallow (to name the three places I'm familiar with). The Comreg urban/rural split is unlikely to work unless they can get Chorus to connect the cable (where my father lives is fully cabled - Chorus didn't feel the need to connect it to their network)

2 weeks to deadline for submissions.

    Any official ICDG line yet?

It concerns Dublin Cork Waterford Galway Limerick and then the rest of the country get a different set of priorities.

Perhaps ITV will join BBC FTA and Chorus / NTL will close and no-one will want expensive poorly engineered stuff via MMDS "supported" by Chorus/NTL
