It was probably just made up to sell indulgences. I heard recently the Church has decided "oh wait it doesn't exist". Great how they can find these things out just like that. From what I can tell from the Bible, non-believers and others who don't get into heaven but aren't bad enough for eternal damnation just don't get resurrected.

Re: the status of Purgatory, by k.oriordan, I think you might have this mixed up with the concept of Limbo, which was not technically the same as Purgatory, it being the result of theological musing and not doctrine.

Re: Limerick, you might have something there.

The way I see it is that because God is omni-powerful, he therfore has control of time, so people who have died before automatically go to judgement day and it seems like an instance, and when we die, or Jesus returns, that will be the same day and noone actually "waits" for thousands of years.

If you can understand that, I can't really put it in words properly for some reason...

not like you'd notice the wait anyway if you're dead. From what I can remember of the Bible, when you die you wait in the ground for the day of judgement but you're not concious because you're dead. the exact words were "for the dead are conscious of nothing at all". As far as I remember then it was a case of believers get resurrected and sent to heaven, evil people are awoken to be thrown into the pit of flame whatever and non-believers unspecified.

Purgatory = rehab for the soul: a place you go to to flush out venial sins from your soul before being allowed to enter Heaven.
