D-Link 604+ or Netgear DG824M?

I can't make up my mind between these two ADSL modem / routers. I've heard reports that the Netgear doesn't cut it with the wireless - the range is supposed to be very poor - can anybody confim this?

As for the D-Link, it seems perfect, but I've read about problems with "opening ports" - whatever that means?

I was considering the Linksys ADSL & PCMCIA Card Router option but the range couldn't be that good considering there's no antenna could it?

    Cheers

    Hi,

I have the Netgear 824 and it works a treat as far as wireless is concerned. I have no hesitation recommending it. Good Buy.

Im not familiar with the other router.

I have the D-link, wireless works flawlessly and I have no problem opening ports, have done so for RDP, FTP, and a few other things. Never used the Netgear so no clue.

....and I have the linksys, and had a few configuration problems which were solved with the firmware upgrade.

The wireless range is not going to be as good as one with an antenna, but still I had no problems with the wireless range.

    Have a search here...

Is there anything preventing me from getting a modem/router from Dabs in the UK? I would not think so.

I got the D-link DSL-604+ from www.dslwarehouse.co.uk. absolutely no compatibility issues!

Anyone have any problems with games on any routers? One of the reviews on Amazon for the DG814 complains about it being incompatible with some games.. not sure if its just hosting or actually joining.

I seriously hope you havnt bought one!

I went through 2 of them though I did nothing wrong
    with either unit.

D-link actually acknowledged they were having problems
with the units and sent me out a 2nd
(usually the returnee must pay the shipping).

The second I plugged in the replacement, it worked for
about 5 minutes, i re-configured something in the web browser admin utility , rebooted my machine and bang - the unit died again.

Elara.ie systems promised me a full refund of the value of the unit which i discover today they left me €100 short - will be ringing them tomorrow...

Look below for confirmation before you make your choice ..
I tried to update the firmware on my dlink 604+ adsl router. When I
rebooted it the power light comes on, the adsl light comes on and
stays on, and that is it. No flashing status light. No DHCP
assigning and you cannot access the router via the web browser.
I think it is dead. I have tried the factory reset button and that
seems to do nothing. Has anyone got any ideas as to what I can do?

Read the news before buying this kind of stuff.
I posted a list of problems in some UK newsgroups (I am from France) as this
(very bugguy) model is sold only in Europe and not sold in USA.....
In France, I know 12 personns who bought this model, and 5 had a dead router
    after upgrading the firmware.
I sold mine after 3 weeks of nightmare with it. Naturally I have lost about
30% of its value when I sold it.
Dlink support (both in UK and France) never answered me, neither about
security issues, nor the long list of bugs.
    Regards

Thanks for the reply. I should have checked before buying. Time to
    get something new I think.

Me too. I hate NAT and tried to disable it, seeing as I have a range of 8
addresses. I set the Ethernet address to the same address as the official
router address that I'm supposed to use. It wanted to reboot - I've not
    heard
from it since. The lights are on but nobody is home.
Incidently, I did flash it. It was working with NAT for several hours after
    I
flashed it. I had to flash it because when I tried to set the IP address to
the real one using the original flashed bios, it would just stop responding
until I unplugged the ADSL line.
I don't know whether to send it back or take a hammer to it. I think the
    hammer might be more satisfying.
Please, please, post here if you discover anything new to fix it!
I notice that there is an obsurb RJ14 serial console connection. I don't
    have
one of those cables to I don't know if anything can be done there.
    Rob.

By the way, i've since purchased a Netgear DG824M and its working like a dream..

Netgear will cost you about €269 in it Direct -
D-link have dropped the price of their unit to under €200

    - wonder why?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

the DG824M is €10 cheaper on Elara but i suppose if you take shipping into account it will be about the same if not more.

I posted a while back on the netgear (€195 +P&P ), I'm sure these guys can haggle. Don't know whether VAT is included.
