I've asked this on the grub mailing list, the rackshack forums, ILUG and CLUG, and many other places, but I've never got an authoritative answer that I trust. Anyone here got any suggestions?

Best thing IMO is check /etc/lilo.conf, if it looks like its setup correctly for your system, then it probably is.

I *think* the default is grub , so in most cases i'd take it for granted that its the bootloader installed on your servers.

Also if lilo.conf.anaconda is present in /etc then its gota be grub.

quote "if it mentions grub anywhere, like /boot/ then its definately grub"

    Hi,
while looking for the configuration files for lilo or grub may give some indication, it is not an answer to which of them is in your MBR.
Many distros will have both an /etc/lilo.conf AND a /boot/grub/menu.conf .

This command will tell you for sure.

    dd if=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1 | grep -a -o -e LILO -e GRUB

Change the disk hda to sda or whatever you use yourself.
