Shell Accounts

I apologise if this has been asked a million times, but does anybody have any recommendations for a decent shell account? I don't want the million billion features of a web hosting account, I want somewhere to store some files, host some email, and maybe host a basic webpage. Stuff like recent, and full versions of stuff like mutt, vim, gcc etc is a must. IMAP access would be nice as well.

A lot of the hosting I look at sees shell access as a secondary thing. I don't need a bloody control panel that'll let me setup a feckin' shopping cart, or message board, or even IRCd (sigh).

    Any recommendations?

I throughly recommend http://sdf-eu.org/, sister of sdf.org. It has everything you mention below without any silly frills. You can try out a limited shell for free by telnetting to the above domain name, it costs a once off donation of €36 to become a member.

The system has a number of machines running NetBSD on alphas. It's been running in one form or another since the 80's. You get 300mb of space for mail/web/files. A lot of "old school" apps are still used by the users, including gopher and bbs etc.. and requests for new software are usually granted.

oh and grex is another famous shell a/c you could check out...

It's a _very_ limited shell ;). I'm not sure how good they'd be in the case of a server dying, ie, 'It'll be back by friday' when it's tuesday. I'd almost prefer to stick to something a bit more formal/professional.

    Thanks for the suggestion 8)
