The Australian Broadband Disaster, is this Ireland?

    Especially at this website

    http://www.whirlpool.net.au/

Australia has had Broadband for far longer than Ireland has and should have gotten past these problems sooner....with proper regulatory action and a government that was not afraid of local monpolies. Again, International links are very cheap.

The size of the country militates against Wireless deployments , unlike here.

Their local Telco is great at installing line splitters as well , 'A Stoned Koala ate yer Copper Mate' being a standard excuse from Biddy down under. We should export a few Biddies out there to really fossilise their Customer Relations systems.

Oh, now I like to shout about incompetent/sneaky argument alot, and usually I believe it's actually incompentence, but Telstra look like right sneaky critters. particulaly as described on that whirlpool site.

Purposely failing adsl lines, taking competitors customers, capping, high charges, long contracts ....

An a slightly similar subject, its not quiet the same thing but AOL has blocked Teltra, afaik they are still blocked.

So basically Telstra has other problems as well..

Most of the problems in Australia are down to Richard Alston, their "IT Minister". Google for "australia luddite" and you'll see why.

    Telstra, the Australian Eircom.
Competition in the ADSL market has been a vexed issue for Telstra since it began selling the service in mid-2000. Its wholesale product was originally priced too high for other service providers to compete with Telstra's own retail pricing.

    and more
TELSTRA is launching an inquiry into its high-speed internet infrastructure procedures after The Australian (newspaper) raised complaints from customers of rival internet service providers (ISP).
The move came after claims that would-be broadband customers were told their phoneline would not support a popular high-speed internet service, known as ADSL, using a provider other than Telstra.

    and phew
Telstra's Kerrina Lawrence said both Telstra Wholesale and Bigpond used the same computerised service quality check, which made it impossible for the carrier to favour one set of customers over another.

From the same slasdot article, I'm sure it will ring true to all of us here
For some times, here in france FT had a monopoly for the last kilometer link.

This shows that the DSL deployement was not so quick mainly because of the price

Now, that the last KM has been deregulated, the DSL market is booming : +100% on one year !

Some of the ISP use the provider services from FranceTelecom, other have their own core service. We even have some bank now offering DSL services (operated by third party ISP) ! OF course the most interrested thing is the price: 30€ for a 1Mb no-limit DSL . And this is constantly decreasing as more as the deregulation is gaining momentum....
