I've recently gone back to playing huge amounts of UFO: Enemy Unknown and X-COM: Terror From The Deep. It still surprises me how good the strategic combat bits are, in this day and age of pretty looking realtime strategy. The lighting effects, the field of view, the logistics, and the weapons, although they look crude and are bodges to make it all seem like 3D, work together superbly, and I don't think I've played much better strategy games than these two. Nice and all as the likes of C&C and Ground Control may be, there's just something about the XCOM games that makes them even more tense and exiting than their more modern, realtime brothers.

Have there been any turn based strategy games released recently?

Apologies, but I really needed to pay homage to how good those games are, and this seemed like the right forum for it...

Yeah, love UFO: Enemy Unkown. first played it on my Amiga 1200.
When through a spate of playing it again a copuple of months back when i got it of a mate who had the pc version gathering dust on his shelf. Am i looking back through nostalgic tinted glasses or did the amiga version look much better? Though at times it took ages to do the aliens turn.

The suspense was great alright, think its something to do with finishing your turn and waiting for the computer to do the aliens turn, not being able to do anything about it and praying that an alien doesnt come around that corner cause if he does he'll nuke 1/2 my team and a few more might panic and drop their weapons and run.
    great stuff :D

Best turn based one Ive played would probabl be Warhammer 40k: Chaos Gate. It had a great single player, doesnt seem to work with XP tho :(

Not many turn based these days, the Civ games are fun, but later on turns take too long so it just gets boring.

Altair interactive are developing a modern version of UFO after the Gallop brothers ran out of cash - got the plug pulled on Dreamland Chronicles - their official follow up. Should be ok - it's out later this year. I bought the collectors edition of UFO to play on Windows 2000 as I didn't have any win9x pc's left it'd work on ( my original copy that is ). It's direct x written but looks the same but with working sound !
Other than that, there's not much else happening in that area but try all the mods for it - they make a game really challenging - generates new terrain, completly different ufo's etc.

Probably the Best game I ever played !

plenty of turn based games still being made n released, just not getting main stream releases for obvious reasons. if you enjoyed the xcom games you should try out incubation, another classic turn based game.

    Mmmm, nostaglia.... :)

One of the reasons I keep an old 486 knocking around the place is UFO, TFTD and Panzer General.

Invading the US, what more could you wish for... ;)

Speaking of which, a really good UFO site is http://www.xcomufo.com/

Has downloads, strategy guides, even a link to a open source version of UFO if anyone is interested in getting involved with that.

I think UFO has to be amongst my top 5 played games of all time - apart from Civ 2 and 3 of course ...

Amen to that, UFO is the shiz, i nearly did my nut trying to get it to work on my laptop, untill I found a win32 version which runs sweet on 2k/xp (provided you disable directdraw or run the patch).

As for remakes ----> http://www.projectxenocide.com/ looks very respactable but a long way off finishing...
