Since getting connected with Netsource on 30th May, I'm noticing that it's taking much longer to connect to irc.
    It sticks at
    "Looking up your hostname
    Checking Ident
    Found your hostname"
screen for at least 1 minute.
Dial-up with Esat never took longer than 6 or 7 seconds.

I can't seem to see any settings that I need to change ...

Anyone know why this is happening?

If you have a router, its probably the firewall in your router the reason it takes longer to connect. :)
Nothing you can do about it unless you drop your firewall protection :):)

I haven't got the firewall running.

And... there's no similar delay with any other proggies.... that's why I'm

Its the firewall or some sort of sharing protection you have running. Its the same with my dialup when im using the shared connection.

It's not a very long wait anyway..

I had the same problem in work, play around with File>options>connect>local info if you're using mIRC, fixed it for me, i only had the problem on particular servers.

    Any luck?

I changed a couple thing but there was no difference in the connection time...

Use the mirc 16 bit client and it should be alright.

    Guys,

The problem lies with ident, when you connect to an irc server it tries to connect to an ident daemon on your PC to find out your username. if it doesn't find one your username will have a ~ infront on it on IRC. if there is one it's fine. So i suggest you add a port forward for the ident port to your windows boxes your ICS or the router you are using etc.

The port in question is 113/tcp, enable mirc's ident service and redirect that port and all should be hunky dorey :)

Well... my username doesn't have a ~ in front of it when I join.
So....do you still suggest the above solution?

    I think I'd need step-by-step instructions... :(

Nah. Unless there's a firewall that's DROPing (as opposed to REJECTing), the IRC server will get a Connection refused when it tries an ident query and will give up instantly. His problem is reverse DNS.

That's beyond your control. Discuss the matter with your ISP.
