what's the best way to share broadband?

    waiting to get iol's broadband here in sligo.
    when i do i would like to share the connection with two pc's i have in the house in seperate rooms. it's a usb modem, so i wonder whats the best way of sharing the connection without having to have one or other of the pc's switched on so one is a slave to the other?

    I got one when netsource came out and installed it for me, look around or do a search in google and I'm sure you will find one. You can get them pretty cheap these days

    would the idea of a router require one of the pc's to be powered on so the other can benifit

    Most routers use ethernet connections. USB is rare, though available. Most ADSL router have the modem built-in.

    The router acts as a mini pc (its not as big, only a small box about as big as 5 of those big matchboxes) It has to stay on but your pcs do not have to

    have a look on komplett.ie think they have ones for €50 or €60 also try http://www.computeruniverse.net/hardware_english.asp also ebay.co.uk is good for used ones

    Just set the xDSL modem thing up with the one PC that is used most (PC1). Set its IP address to 192.168.0.1 for example.

    Then share the connection within the Connection Settings.

    Set PC2's IP address to 192.168.0.2and set the Gateway to 192.168.0.1

    You will need to connect the 2 PC's using a cross over Ethernet cable.
