    Planet launches Ethernet-over-VDSL converter
Press release; Chinmei Sung, DigiTimes.com [Tuesday 10 June 2003]

Planet Technology, a Taiwan-based networking and telecommunications equipment vendor, today announced its new Ethernet-over-VDSL (very high data rate digital subscriber line) converter.

The device, powered by chip solutions from Infineon Technologies, is based on two core networking technologies: Ethernet and VDSL, which offer fast data transmission speed over existing copper telephone lines without the need for rewiring.

Fully compatible with Cisco Systems’s LRE (Long-reach Ethernet) switch and CPE (customer premise equipment) modems, the VDSL solution provides a much cheaper replacement and smooth migration for existing Cisco LRE networks, the company said.

The converter has a switching architecture with one RJ-45 10/100Mbps Ethernet port and one VDSL port with two RJ-11 connectors. When the VC-102-master is used to connect to a VC-102-slave as a standalone pair, up to five speeds can be selected by a DIP switch on the VC-102-master to compensate for connection distance.

The selected speed can be up to 15/17Mbps asymmetric data rate at 1.05km and up to 5/5Mbps asymmetric data rate at 1.5km.
