A friend of mine has become a freight train driver in the last few years (UK). He has no connections that I'm aware of. He was a retail manager before they shut a load of shops. He gets paid a proper wedge of money too but the hours/shift patterns are horrendous - actually had a bump on the road after a run of shifts a few weeks ago, dozed at the wheel. I am not even that good at my own job - let alone any other.

But in recent years I have started to regret I did not go into something in either Teaching - Counseling or psychotherapy and that whole area - or becoming a chef. Not sure how good I would be at any of them really as I do them all at a high hobby level - but I enjoy them and don't seem that bad at them.

I vaguely remember wanting to be a train driver when I was young. But as a teenager I caught the computing bug and wanted to do something computer related. I have written software as a job for 27 years at this stage and have gotten to detest it - as a job - but I still love it as a hobby. I just wish I could get a job more like a hobby than the corporate pseudo-agile BS. I was in a start-up a few years ago and it was great until they ran out of money. Everything else recently has just been a slog.

I’d love to go back to being a marine biologist. I was for 5-6 years after I left college. Spent time working on research vessels at sea, spent time in Scotland working with a group on seals and bottle nose dolphins, then managed to get a funded PhD doing research on offshore islands off the west coast - was let loose for 3 years with a boat and a jeep. Spent time on my own camping on various uninhabited islands off Mayo and Galway. Was an amazing time but I ended up in a ‘normal’ job (which pays much better) as very few opportunities in marine biology.

Otherwise would love to be a tree surgeon, always liked the look of the work.

If I wasn't doing what I'm doing I'd love to work in an animal rescue. I can't think of anything I'd like more than spending the day with cats and dogs.

Always thought I would make a good therapist too.

I grew up on a farm, I had (and still have) an obsession with farming, soil types, stocking rates, etc. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd gladly become a farmer. Here's a funny TikTok video of my MUCH younger self from blurry cine footage from the 80s at the air club... though I never became a professional pilot I did have absolutely great fun fun as a hobby pilot until I had to give up solo flight due to failing license renewal eyesight exam. I recommend anybody with any dream in this direction to try a few lessons, it's not impossibly expensive and you can make nice progress and have fun at least passing theory exams. A great thing to take up on retirement with lump sum. I am still allowed take the controls when in the company of a qualified instructor who always leaves me to it from start-up to shut-down.

As I posted earlier, I envy Eoghan Corry his job. He gets to fly about first class here there and everywhere and report on it without having to go into prose and property about it!

One thing you can always do nowadays is blog about your trips, and pay to get followers and sell yourself as such, if you have the ambition. Then people might even start paying you to travel - there's always the dream!
