I've been meaning to do a faq for a good while now, and have half started on it. If people could post up common questions ? So far, off the top of my head,

how do network my two/or more pc's ?
what are the phone nubmers for various isps ?
    what is adsl ?
    what is isdn ?
    can i get adsl ?
    What's the best adsl modem/router ?
where can i get networking equipment ?

post up any more would be great. I'll probably just go through the board and post links to various topics that answer the question sufficiently.

    Gav

Maybe links to some sites would be useful too.

www.wown.info and www.practicallynetworked.com for networking help.

    www.dslreports.com for DSL related info.

    http://iiu.taint.org/details/index.html for ISP info. (Oceanfree's dialup number is now 1890 923 204)

www.modemhelp.net is good for dialup/modem related problems

www.driverguide.com or www.google.ie for "where can I find drivers for xyz"

I know there's alot more out there but these would answer many of the questions that get posted from time to time.

    Here's a couple more links:

    www.homenethelp.com
Just found this site, looks to have some good info on it. It has a section on connection sharing too.

    www.modemhelp.org
This one also has sections on cable/dsl.

How about posting information about wireless networking, setting up a network with proper security, firewalling etc ... possibly explaining differences between 802.11a and b and g variations. The G variation is strange because it works in the 2.4GHz band (same as 802.11b) but provides "up to" 54Mbps (same as 802.11a) .. some blurb from one of the G boys is here: --dead link removed--- .. but i have read elsewhere that G may be a bit of a dead duck because it is not out there but 801.22a is....

And just while I was writing this is was googling and found http://www.sfwireless.net which has a lot of answers about all this..

Hmm ... I seem to have gone from asking to answering .. :D

[edit] I know verb has said keep the wireless stuff to the wireless forum, but surely with the popularity of wireless networking at the moment a small bit of this forum could be given to explaining the ins and outs and whatnots of wireless networking ... if you dont agree, just delete this post, wont bother me ... [/edit]

Verb, feel free to link to the two stickies in Ireland Offline regarding connections (1 faq each for Flat Rate options and Broadband Options )

not only is there an overlap with this forum and Wireless, networking broadband connections is a hot topic and so the Broadband forum will contain relevant information. How can links be made between topics in different forums or is it up to individuals to search properly and be aware of this when posting?

    Just wrote this tonight

Should give most Joe Spudknife's a quick rundown of common networking stuff.

If I've made an error on anything, please point it out.

You might capitalize the thread title - that 'q' looks quite like a 'g' when underlined!

[strike]Where is the link for the free dial-up local numbers that O2 use? I spent 30 mins. looking for the webpage on O2.ie but I cannot find it.[/strike]

I found the link, after going back 15 odd pages in the forum.

A site which provides a lot of easily readable networking theory and academic information conveniently laid out

    http://www2.rad.com/networks

Handy for students especially I'd think.

I've just made a new sticky for tutorials. I'm going to check through this thread at some stage and transfer stuff into the new thread and remove any dead links.

There's a lot of dead links in this thread. I've reported a couple but maybe a mod should clean it up and remove chatty posts etc? (inc this one).

Ok so I am new here and I don't know if I am posting this in the right way or in the right place, so apologies in advance !
I am trying to setup a home network but here is my problem, my internet connection is provided through my android phone and I use may different OS's Ubuntu, Fedora, Windows 7, Jolicloud etc...
I have looked at many different routers but none of them to be able to "take in" a signal from a existing wireless connection or from a USB connection.
Really i don't need the network to be able to share a Internet connection because of the wireless AP already provided by the phone (however it would be nice).
All I really want is a way to easily and cheaply connect maybe three or four of my computers together to allow me to share files between them easily.
Ok so any help would be really appreciated ! Thanks !
