Do both these practices help in the loss of excess weight? I'm not talking about loosing weight from a normal size, its loosing an excess stone or two.

Thanks for any replies. I don't mean to substitute exercise with chewing gum or anything either btw, just wondering if chewing alot of gum and drinking loads of water would help in things...

In a word, no! Would be great if it did work though!

Losing weight is a combination of diet(not lack of food) and exercise.

As I said, its not like I want to sit on my arse all day and just chew gum and drink water, I do exercise and cut down on foods also. BUT its just someone told me that lots of water, and gum to digest food faster helps

water will help the body hydrated and keep the digestive system in good condition alright, but it doesn't aid in weight loss. Chewing gum doesn't either, in actual fact chewing gum can ause acid release to the stomach, the body senses the chewing and releases acid to the stomach used to break down and digest food, when this food doesn't come, you can end up with excess acid in your belly.

I heard if you drink Cold water it uses up energy to cool you down as the water runs through your system?

This was investigated on this board before. For this to be effective, you would need to be drinking fatal amounts of water every day (yes, you can die from drinking too much water). You burn more energy lifting the glass to your mouth than heating up the water.

Water is good for weight loss in that it helps keep your system hydrated. I'm not entirely sure how it works, but it does aid the fat burning process to keep your body hydrated. Many diets will recommend you start drinking more water when you start the diet. If you maintain the water drinking and proper eating for a week, you could notice a huge drop. I've seen 18st people lose half a stone in a week. This is not actual fat loss, it's pure detox. Your weight may read differently, but your body fat % won't have changed much. Maybe someone here actuall knows how this works.

Chewing gum will only make you hungry and will make you produce excess stomach acid. Chewing gum while working out, I can't imagine is a good idea.

funnily enough, fruit isnt the best thing to be eating in a serious weight loss diet as they contain lots of bad sugars :(

but water can help speed up your metabolism making fat loss faster!

There's a bit of debate about it, but drinking ice cold water has been estimated to consume as much as 70 extra calories by heating it up. Chewing gum also releases digestive acids etc which may stimulate the metabolism. Even if the first one (water) is overestimated, both have a minor contributary effect, but as you said, I wouldn't base a diet on them!

yes water does aid the weight loss process combined with diets salads cutting the fat off meats white meats increasing exercise a half hour power walk each day but its the combination that works.

Water hydrates your kidneys first, which aids the productivity of your liver in metabolising stored fat.

I think the recommended amount to drink is for the average person is 2.5 litres a day (spread over the whole day rather than all at once of course, and not too close to bedtime!) The body often mistakes thirst for hunger, so drinking water when you're feeling the urge for a snack between your meals can fill you up enough to avoid the snack.

Sugar-free gums contain phenylalinine, which can act as a laxative. I suppose if you chew enough of this type of gum, it will help you lose 'weight'.

    :D

Drinking a fairly serious amount of water (15+ litres a day) washes all the minerals and nutrients out of your system hence making your body burn the reserves and therefore making you lose weight. This is a ****ed up way of losing weight however and does more harm than good.

Nicotine gum is the only chewing gum that will help you lose weight. It raises metabolism slightly (and can be further propentiated by adding caffeine).

Before anyone asks, the gum form is not addictive.

I unfortunately have difficulty reconciling this with what I know of physiology. Your kidneys are always hydrated and filter toxins and water non-stop.

No, no, no - it will just make you run to the toilet non-stop and not a good idea.

Water is a good thing - but not as a dieting tool, but simply because most people have a low intake of the stuff. Its a part of healthy living - not a part of a diet per se.

??? I know a guy who is 'addicted' to nicotine gum for the last five years. Is it all in his mind?

I lost three stone in the most unhealthy way possible by going on a chewing gum/water crash diet a few years ago when I was 14. Well I'm presuming it's unhealthy but I lost 3 stone... The only bad effect was that the chewing gum destroyed my teeth. I'm guessing you're like me in that you'll need something to distract you if you're not going to eat, something that you can reach for when you feel the urge... Chewing gum, my friend, is not the answer.

I guess I should have clarified that it should be used as any fat loss supplement i.e. use it for 2-4 weeks, not year round. I think most people would be addicted to any chemical following 5 years of continuous use.

    From Chemically Correct: Nicotine
It should be noted that the highly addictive quality of cigarettes lies not within its nicotine content, but rather its nicotine pharmacokinetics. Cigarettes provide an immediate jolt of nicotine to the CNS, resulting in almost instant gratification. Delaying nicotine gratification with the use of slower delivery mechanisms should aid minimizing addictive potential.
