Any other counties with slow turn around times on license ? (Kerry)

    first license was 3 months

    next was 2 months

put a substitution in on the second rifle for another rifle same calibre and now waiting 4 weeks …

when I handed in the new sub I would have thought 2/3 weeks max as surely it had all been checked on the original license that I substituted :(

Waited 6 months last year in kerry for a like for like substitution for a .22 Rifle they moved all firearms to Tralee from Killarney for some reason but was still a joke to be honest, I even rang on several days and the excuses and trying to get through unbelievable.

I'm waiting over 3 months on a renewal. Because it's taking so long, I put the gun in storage with a gun dealer.

Spoke with my FO and was fed all sorts of bs on the delay.

Crazy like a new license down here takes 3 months can’t understand how a simple substitution takes nearly the same amount of time when a rifle was issued already

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 311 ✭✭john jameson

Little over 2 week in to my wait I got a call from the F/O seeking pictures of my gun box locked ....opened ....keys in door and the mechanism ffs.

She claimed that there is a new super and there "getting used of his way"

Iv 3 licences and a box for a good number of years now

She also said she would get things moving.

    That was 6 weeks ago

While only tangential to shooting, an application for renewal of an authorisation to hold deactivated or blank firing firearms, submitted 5 weeks before expiration, has only been replied to 1 week before expiration, excuse being "not in the office", with an addendum that they will try to put it through as soon as possible.

Another week passes by and still no sign of my substitution...... I believe that's 9 weeks now 😡

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 JasonCee

I'm at week 9 also and still no progress after emailing/calling my FO.

The whole process is incredibly frustrating and disconcerting.

I sware what there doing is letting the work load pile up!! Besides firearms licences been saught I'm sure there is is plenty of other people waiting on verious paperwork and when questions are asked as to why this has happened they will be quick enough to use the "short staffed" and be whining about the absenteeism/ sick leave and retirements etc so they get more staff to sort the problem that they let build!

Its absolutely crazy that lads waiting on simple substitutions are waiting as long as lads for first time applications !!

Il soon be approaching 3 months wait for a simple sub that could be done in 3 days !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89 ✭✭pab1997

You’ve hit the nail on the head .. if I’d known a sub would have taken as long I’d have just applied for a new license and kept the 2 guns would have been the same timeframe

Got my renewal after 58 days.

In fairness, the station have lost their civilian who was brilliant for assessing the application and checking everything ( I handed my renewal to a Garda on the desk and it might as well have been the plans for the space shuttle) and they also have a new FO who, I know, has about 10 other roles as well AND we have a new Super.

Just happy that I got the renewal before licence expired at the end of May and hopefully things will speed up in future.

Waiting since January!!! Any way I can push this? I called the station but from experience if you call more than once you end up waiting an extra 2 months ...... retaliation is alive and well in East Galway

67 days waiting in kerry on a like for like substitution 🙃

    some joke

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭BattleCorp

I've a licence out since November last year. I'm still waiting for the renewal. I was told about 3 weeks ago that it's on the way but no sign of it yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 311 ✭✭john jameson

Wait till ya hear this one !!

I took a lad with me down to the local firearms dealer around the same time as I decided on my hw97kt he bought a fx dreamline

I in my haste to get my substitute sorted quickly i went asap to the local barracks with my paper work which my buddy submitted his at least 2 weeks later .

He shows me today at work that he has been granted his licence now bare in mind he is a first time applicant and he has his license before I have my substitution ffs I'm delighted for him but I'm furious that I'm still waiting on a simple sub!!

I just cant get me head around this B/S

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 889 ✭✭✭Wadi14

2 renewals and a update to EU pass, I asked the FO if possible to process it quickly, to apply for the NI visitors pass.

I only had to wait 5mts and 1 week, oh and a .22 rifle mag limit of 5 rounds, because I have 5 rd mags, if I buy a 10 rd mag they will update the license, that will probably only take a couple of months.

    Something needs to change!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 JasonCee

The current system is archaic and requires immediate modernising. A sub/renewal should be almost instantaneous.

Just received my grant letter today. 12 weeks total turn around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89 ✭✭pab1997

10 weeks on sub here .. if it was a court summons i garauntee I’d have it in a week no bother they seem brutal at processing firearm stuff in kerry always changing fo and super

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 JasonCee

Took me 3 months of constantly being in contact with my super and FO. They were probably sick of me at the end. The whole process is farcical. One might even think its on purpose...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89 ✭✭pab1997

Day 80 on a substitution , thinking of emailing the super to see can i get some actual information on what’s going on .. is that the right thing to do? Has anyone had to do it ? FO not back till Friday but hasn’t given concrete info on what’s happening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 270 ✭✭Scalachi

Why have you waited this long ? I may be lucky in that, in my district, they do not seem to add any undue delays, my last renewal took 8 days (much faster than expected - but after 80 days I would be camped in the station.) I have ensured that I communicate with the local licensing officer and the Superintendent and normally his secretary as well, which I think more people should do, I would start with a phone call to the Superintendent's secretary and ask for an update, i.e. is it on his desk in a pile! - I would then ask for a meeting with the Superintendent and you may find that act alone gets a move on the paperwork.

Much easier to process the sub than to take the time to meet you etc etc

    Just my 2 cent

Totally agree. See post 24 above regarding relevant law.

If I'm waiting more that 2 weeks for a sub or 3 weeks for a new license then it's on the phone to my FO I'd be calling to find out what the delay is.

When I was new to shooting I was waiting 7 months for a license until I demanded a meeting with the Super. I was told that there had been 4 new Supers within that time and each had put any licenses on the 'intray' for the next Super. I had the license within a couple of days after that meeting.

My record for a sub was, handed in the form on a Wednesday at 8pm and license was in thru the letter box Friday morning.

I’ve rang the FO about 10 times .. I was told 2 months in that it was progressing as normal and wouldn’t be long , then told there was something wrong on the form in relation to the optics box which was ticked on the original rifle and granted .. sent an email stating it was granted last time .. that was 3 weeks ago not seen anything since.. FO works like 2 days a week and can’t seem to find a way of contacting the super or even his secretary for that matter .. second rifle too so it’s not like I’m first time applying

Use this link, input county then pick station and click more information. It will give you all contact details as well as email for super or chief super.

Does MS affect a license application?

Day 93 for me and they wrote to my GP on Day 81 and I saw him on what would have been Day 85 since my application went in.

Spoke to Garda that I submitted it to and she said decision is due by the 11th July, I submitted my application on the 14th March.

She also didn't know why they wrote to my GP when I am only 56?

Can't fathom what they were doing for the previous 3 months??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89 ✭✭pab1997

Mine sat with them also for 2 months before I heard anything .. I’m on day 96 for a substitute

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 561 ✭✭✭Asus1

Being nosey but is there a reason they contacted your GP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 596 ✭✭✭JP22

Short answer is they are entitled to according to current regs.

I have had a few renewals recently (I live in Wicklow). Renewal letters with form come pretty much 3 months before expiry of licence. Fill in form, drop in to local station, they approve and its usually all done and dusted in 10 days. I had a query recently that I sent an email about, it was answered quickly, promptly and clarified to my satisfaction. There has been a big improvement here in Wicklow in the last few years, and while I know there are a number of lads around the country who are frustrated with the system (I was one of these lads a few years back!), its good to know the system does work when the Super for your area is organised and on the ball.
