Child has intolerances / other child's birthday

    Hi,

    A paediatrician has advised my 5 year old to not have any extra sugar in her diet due to a skin condition.

    So far she has been great, she tells everybody yet still asks for treats and is reasonable when I tell her no because of the sugar.

    My younger child has a birthday soon and we will be having a family party with extended family and friends as guests.

    What would you do party food wise?

    I am not going to try and convert the family to sugar free living, too much work and impossible task. I've suggested it to the five year old and she has said to make her a sugar free version! She's a clever clogs and I will make some things from Susan jane Murray website, but what would you do for the rest of the food?

    And the cake?

    Go the savoury path - crisps, prawn crackers, pretzels; chips and wedges, mini pizzas; pasta and rice dishes; cocktail sausages, chicken wings, burgers - consider having a barbecue? - small sandwiches (premade or do your own), spaghetti and meat balls - go all out on everything but the sweet stuff. You could maybe satisfy the other kids' want for sugar with soft drinks to keep it away from your own child.

    Honestly I'd much prefer to be telling you to serve everyone fruit salads and vegetable dishes but we can only do so much, guests and the children's parents probably wouldn't realise how much of a favour you'd be doing them.

    If you really don't want to not give the cake to the child in question then maybe go with something with less icing, maybe even just jam and cream with the a plain enough cake? or an ice cream cake, if a small bit of that wouldn't be too much for your child.

    Hopefully she will some day realise how lucky she is - having a more noticable reason to cut down on processed sugar.

    Oh, don't forget nuts and dried fruit too
